31Rsync is a fast and extraordinarily versatile file copying tool. It can copy
32locally, to/from another host over any remote shell, or to/from a remote rsync
33daemon. It offers a large number of options that control every aspect of its
34behavior and permit very flexible specification of the set of files to be
35copied. It is famous for its delta-transfer algorithm, which reduces the
36amount of data sent over the network by sending only the differences between
37the source files and the existing files in the destination. Rsync is widely
38used for backups and mirroring and as an improved copy command for everyday
39use.

41Rsync finds files that need to be transferred using a "quick check" algorithm
42(by default) that looks for files that have changed in size or in last-modified
43time. Any changes in the other preserved attributes (as requested by options)
44are made on the destination file directly when the quick check indicates that
45the file's data does not need to be updated.

62There are two different ways for rsync to contact a remote system: using a
63remote-shell program as the transport (such as ssh or rsh) or contacting an
64rsync daemon directly via TCP. The remote-shell transport is used whenever the
65source or destination path contains a single colon (:) separator after a host
66specification. Contacting an rsync daemon directly happens when the source or
67destination path contains a double colon (::) separator after a host

238It is sometimes useful to use various features of an rsync daemon (such as
239named modules) without actually allowing any new socket connections into a
240system (other than what is already required to allow remote-shell access).
241Rsync supports connecting to a host using a remote shell and then spawning a
242single-use "daemon" server that expects to read its config file in the home dir
243of the remote user. This can be useful if you want to encrypt a daemon-style
244transfer's data, but since the daemon is started up fresh by the remote user,
245you may not be able to use features such as chroot or change the uid used by
246the daemon. (For another way to encrypt a daemon transfer, consider using ssh
247to tunnel a local port to a remote machine and configure a normal rsync daemon
248on that remote host to only allow connections from "localhost".)

250From the user's perspective, a daemon transfer via a remote-shell connection
251uses nearly the same command-line syntax as a normal rsync-daemon transfer,
252with the only exception being that you must explicitly set the remote shell
253program on the command-line with the `--rsh=COMMAND` option. (Setting the

3749should use the rule ":C", which creates a dir-merge of the .cvsignore file, but
3750parsed in a CVS-compatible manner. You can use this to affect where the
3751`--cvs-exclude` (`-C`) option's inclusion of the per-directory .cvsignore file
3752gets placed into your rules by putting the ":C" wherever you like in your
3753filter rules. Without this, rsync would add the dir-merge rule for the
3754.cvsignore file at the end of all your other rules (giving it a lower priority

3790governs where patterns that start with a / match.

3793slash on a source path or changing your use of the `--relative` option affects

3886Batch mode can be used to apply the same set of updates to many identical
3887systems. Suppose one has a tree which is replicated on a number of hosts. Now
3888suppose some changes have been made to this source tree and those changes need
3889to be propagated to the other hosts. In order to do this using batch mode,
3890rsync is run with the write-batch option to apply the changes made to the
3891source tree to one of the destination trees. The write-batch option causes the
3892rsync client to store in a "batch file" all the information needed to repeat
3893this operation against other, identical destination trees.

3895Generating the batch file once saves having to perform the file status,
3896checksum, and data block generation more than once when updating multiple
3897destination trees. Multicast transport protocols can be used to transfer the
3898batch update files in parallel to many hosts at once, instead of sending the
3899same data to every host individually.

3901To apply the recorded changes to another destination tree, run rsync with the
3902read-batch option, specifying the name of the same batch file, and the
3903destination tree. Rsync updates the destination tree using the information
3904stored in the batch file.

3906For your convenience, a script file is also created when the write-batch option
3907is used: it will be named the same as the batch file with ".sh" appended. This
3908script file contains a command-line suitable for updating a destination tree
3909using the associated batch file. It can be executed using a Bourne (or
3910Bourne-like) shell, optionally passing in an alternate destination tree
3911pathname which is then used instead of the original destination path. This is
3912useful when the destination tree path on the current host differs from the one
3913used to create the batch file.

3927/bdest/dir. The differences between the two examples reveals some of the
3928flexibility you have in how you deal with batches:

3930- The first example shows that the initial copy doesn't have to be local -- you
3931 can push or pull data to/from a remote host using either the remote-shell
3932 syntax or rsync daemon syntax, as desired.
3933- The first example uses the created "foo.sh" file to get the right rsync
3934 options when running the read-batch command on the remote host.
3935- The second example reads the batch data via standard input so that the batch
3936 file doesn't need to be copied to the remote machine first. This example
3937 avoids the foo.sh script because it needed to use a modified `--read-batch`
3938 option, but you could edit the script file if you wished to make use of it
3939 (just be sure that no other option is trying to use standard input, such as
3940 the "`--exclude-from=-`" option).

3942Caveats:

3944The read-batch option expects the destination tree that it is updating to be
3945identical to the destination tree that was used to create the batch update
3946fileset. When a difference between the destination trees is encountered the
3947update might be discarded with a warning (if the file appears to be up-to-date
3948already) or the file-update may be attempted and then, if the file fails to
3949verify, the update discarded with an error. This means that it should be safe
3950to re-run a read-batch operation if the command got interrupted. If you wish
3951to force the batched-update to always be attempted regardless of the file's
3952size and date, use the `-I` option (when reading the batch). If an error
3953occurs, the destination tree will probably be in a partially updated state. In
3954that case, rsync can be used in its regular (non-batch) mode of operation to
3955fix up the destination tree.

3957The rsync version used on all destinations must be at least as new as the one
3958used to generate the batch file. Rsync will die with an error if the protocol
3959version in the batch file is too new for the batch-reading rsync to handle.
3960See also the `--protocol` option for a way to have the creating rsync generate
3961a batch file that an older rsync can understand. (Note that batch files
3962changed format in version 2.6.3, so mixing versions older than that with newer
3963versions will not work.)

3966match the data in the batch file if you didn't set them to the same as the
3967batch-writing command. Other options can (and should) be changed. For
3968instance `--write-batch` changes to `--read-batch`, `--files-from` is dropped,

3970one of the `--delete` options is specified.

3973options into a single list that is appended as a "here" document to the shell

3984Three basic behaviors are possible when rsync encounters a symbolic

4024one that seems to cause the most confusion is "protocol version mismatch -- is
4025your shell clean?".
