tests: Split up tests in 'test_patch'

This is essentially commit ad54f526869804abcdcea8744d90ae85bd0ce34c
("tests: Add 'store_samples' decorator to 'test_patch'") from master
without the 'store_samples' decorator. It's included to avoid merge
conflicts with future patches.
