Eliminate the unwelcome (albeit unlikely) possibility of xmalloc
failure on deficient systems, and simplify gnulib lgpl dependencies.

(rpl_lstat): Rewrite to use stat() in place of the
xmalloc/lstat combination.  Based on a patch from Bruno Haible.
