 831.   [bug]           The configure script tried to determine
                        endianness before making its final decision on
                        which C compiler to use, causing Solaris/x86
                        systems with gcc to be incorrectly identified
                        as big-endian. [RT #1315]
(already fixed on the mainline as part of a larger configure.in reorganization)
