1 | NOTE: This is the ELF version of the binary distribution. If you have |
2 | a DLL system, please either compile e2fsprogs from sources yourself,
3 | or get the DLL version of the binary distribution. The DLL version
a4d09610 | 4 | will have a filename of e2fsprogs-1.04-dllbin.tar.gz |

5 | |
6 | ||
7 | To install the binary distribution of the second extended file
8 | system management programs, just follow the steps:
9 | ||
10 | 1) Install this tar file using the following command:
11 | ||
21c84b71 | 12 | gunzip < e2fsprogs-1.04-elfbin.tar.gz | (cd /; tar Sxvpf - ) |

13 | |
14 | 2) Run ldconfig to update the shared library pointers.
15 | ||
16 | As root, type /sbin/ldconfig. This will update the links to
17 | the shared libraries included in the distribution. You can then remove
18 | the old versions of the libraries from /lib.
19 | ||
20 | 3) Remove any pre-formatted man pages.
21 | ||
22 | Some distributions will have pre-formatted manual pages which
23 | will always be displayed in preference to newer man pages in /usr/man.
24 | If this is the case, you may need to manually remove them in order to
25 | see the correct manual pages. The shell script in
26 | install-utils/remove_preformat_manpages may be helpful in doing so.
27 | ||
28 | 4) Make sure your /etc/fstab file is correct.
29 | ||
30 | Some distributions install an /etc/fstab which is missing the
31 | fifth and sixth field of filesystem entry, which are the dump
32 | frequency, and the fsck pass number, respectively. The problem with
33 | this is that the getmntent() library routine interprets those missing
34 | fields as "0", and a pass number of 0 is documented as meaning that
35 | fsck should not check that particular filesystem. If your entries in
36 | your /etc/fstab file look liks this:
37 | ||
38 | /dev/hda4 / ext2 defaults
39 | ||
40 | you should add "1 1" at the end of each line, so that they look like this:
41 | ||
42 | /dev/hda4 / ext2 defaults 1 1
43 | ||
44 | There is a script in install-utils/convfstab (donated by
45 | Michael Weller) that may help you correct your /etc/fstab file.
46 | ||
47 | 5) Cleanup files from the installation.
48 | ||
49 | When you're done with the installation, you will probably want
50 | to remove /INSTALL (this file), /README, and /install-utils from your
51 | root directory |
