3cc7bca4 4CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.17
5
d47f8ebe 6 - The lpstat command did not allow for destination lists
7 ("lpstat -v printer1,printer2")
8 - Fixed parsing of long filter status messages in the
9 scheduler.
10 - Added some startup performance enhancements to the
11 scheduler so that the printer object information is
12 regenerated fewer times and the MIME type database is
13 not filled with lots of empty filters for raw/direct
14 queues.
854d3bb2 15 - The LPD backend now sends the job title as the print
16 filename.
137d4d44 17 - Added support for variable sizes in the EPSON dot
18 matrix printer drivers. This allows for pages as
19 short as 1/2" (1 row of labels) and does not do an
20 automatic form feed.
21 - French translation updates.
e639fb32 22 - The filters did not quote the page label string when
23 embedding it in PostScript output.
3cc7bca4 24 - The serial backend now enumerates serial ports under
25 MacOS X.
26 - The pdftops filter contained font rasterizer code that
27 wasn't being used and that depended on X11. This code
28 has been removed.

06415a96 31CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.16
32
727e6d14 33 - The cancel and lprm commands now both display an error
34 message and return a non-zero exit status if an
35 attempt is made to cancel a job on a non-existent
36 printer.
37 - The lpoptions command incorrectly complained if a
38 request to delete a non-existent printer was made.
807a1ef5 39 - If the client.conf file defines an alternate server
40 name, the "configure printer" action in the web
41 interface might not work.
7cc9aebd 42 - The lpstat command now supports a "-W" option so that
43 you can display completed jobs as well as
44 not-completed (pending) jobs.
a1ca1702 45 - The lp and lpr commands did not return an error when
46 one or more files in a set of files for printing could
47 not be printed.
3b8ff70f 48 - The lp, lpadmin, and lpstat commands now consistently
49 return with a non-zero exit status when an error
50 occurs.
db628f45 51 - The scheduler would not accept print jobs sent to a
52 stopped remote printer.
da1bfd3d 53 - The texttops filter incorrectly converted the page
54 numbers in the prettyprint header to double-byte
55 characters when printing a non-Unicode text file. This
56 caused an extra space to appear between each digit in
57 the page number.
da312e94 58 - The scheduler did not use a case-insensitive
59 comparison when adding filters for a printer.
be8c3862 60 - Upgraded the pdftops filter to Xpdf 1.01.
801766ac 61 - The scheduler no longer passes the page-border and
62 number-up-layout attributes to filters when printing
63 banner pages.
25037b2b 64 - The LPD backend now uses a 30-second timeout when
65 sending commands and control files, and a 30-second
66 timeout when retrieving responses from an LPD server.
1aef57ed 67 If a timeout occurs, it retries indefinitely. This
25037b2b 68 helps to make LPD printing over VPNs work more
69 reliably.
a9219725 70 - The USB backend now supports device URIs based on the
71 printer serial number and/or model number under Linux.
72 This avoids the "wrong device filename" problem when
73 using more than one USB printer.
c3c5af5e 74 - Now just shutdown the receiving end of a client
75 connection when sending an error that requires the
76 server to disconnect from the client afterwards. This
77 fixes a problem when doing remote administration with
78 encryption enabled.
b05809b0 79 - The scheduler did not send a printer-state-message
80 attribute if the string was empty; it now always sends
81 this attribute. This caused the printer message to be
82 displayed for other printers in the web interface.
04e01993 83 - The LPD backend now supports a "manual_copies" option,
84 e.g.: "lpd://server/queue?manual_copies=no", in order
85 to handle copies for raw jobs to printers that don't
86 implement the LPD protocol properly...
a05e4307 87 - The "mirror" option was not being handled by the
88 PostScript or image filters.
f7696015 89 - Updated the cupsaddsmb command to support the new CUPS
90 driver for Windows NT/2k/XP.
de659667 91 - Filter status lines longer than 1023 characters could
92 cause the scheduler to get into an infinite loop.
aa25b9e1 93 - The scheduler didn't reset the job state to pending
94 when modifying an active printer.
6ed689f8 95 - Now limit the maximum number of recursion steps when
96 searching for a filter for a job, in case a user
97 defines a circular filter rule.
98 - The PostScript filter would embed an invalid
99 requirements comment in some cases.
56e9c951 100 - Added support for embedded job tickets in PostScript
101 files.
5ca43bfd 102 - The PostScript filter now detects EPS files and should
103 better handle printing EPS files.
5ae53c1e 104 - The cancel command now ignores a trailing destination
105 name when cancelling a specific job ID (Solaris
106 compatibility).
879062a9 107 - The scheduler now rejects jobs with copies outside the
da956953 108 range of 1 to MaxCopies, inclusive.
109 - Added new MaxCopies directive to set the maximum
110 number of copies that a user can request.
879062a9 111 - The scheduler didn't block signals while it processed
112 others and when it forked processes.
5ae53c1e 113 - The scheduler checked for new jobs to print when
114 stopping a job. This caused jobs to restart before a
115 shutdown.
098f80c5 116 - Updated the CUPS startup script to better support
117 different timezones and to support the RedHat/Mandrake
118 init script functions, if available.
e426d516 119 - The scheduler did not properly handle backslashes in
120 banner files; it incorrectly assumed that "\c" should
121 always be replaced by "c", instead of only looking for
122 "\{" and replacing it by "{".
90ca6406 123 - The texttops filter didn't handle prettyprint=no.
124 - The text and HP-GL/2 filters didn't check for other
125 common duplex option names like cupsMarkOptions() did.
c56db294 126 - "lpoptions -x printer" no longer clears the "default
127 printer" status of the printer.
3f1897d4 128 - cupsTempFd() now stops trying to create a temporary
129 file after 1000 tries, and aborts on any error other
130 than EEXIST. This should prevent lp/lpr hangs due to
131 a bad or missing temporary directory.
5a3ef28d 132 - The lpadmin command did not send the right URI to the
133 scheduler when setting options on classes. This
134 caused a client-error-bad-request error.
e354b6e3 135 - The CUPS API convenience functions would attempt to
136 connect to the remote server name in a
137 "printer@server" printer name instead of dealing with
138 the default (usually local) server. Aside from
139 causing user confusion, the remote server name might
140 not be resolved properly, causing further problems.
f2320e2d 141 - "lp -q" would cause the "lp" command to segfault, as
142 the program would try to print the option letter that
143 caused the error using the wrong index into the
144 command-line; bugfix from Debian.
f2ffec40 145 - Fixed a minor inconsistancy in the encoding of boolean
146 attributes from printer options in
147 cupsEncodeOptions().
42ede8a2 148 - Added a FilterNice directive which sets the priority
149 of job filter processes that are run by the scheduler.
93704f20 150 - Added Solaris x86 USB printer support.
34f927d3 151 - The USB backend now reports both the ulpt and unlpt
152 devices under *BSD.
78ab59ae 153 - The "lpstat -o" command would truncate the
154 "printer-jobid" string if it was longer than 21
155 characters.
156 - The PJL-based MIME type rules now look in the first
157 1024 bytes instead of just the first 512 bytes to find
158 the language mode.
159 - The image file types are now listed explicitly in the
160 mime.convs file so that additional image file formats
161 do not use the standard CUPS image filters by default.
162 - Updated the Software Programmers Manual to include
163 all of the CUPS API functions.
cefea041 164 - ppdOpen*() no longer sorts choices for an option.
ce691c0f 165 - The web interface now enforces constraints in PPD
166 files when configuring a printer.
3733593d 167 - When stopping a printer, the scheduler didn't set the
168 printer state before stopping the current job.
a56289b6 169 - The cupsaddsmb utility now lists all data files for
170 Win9x and WinMe clients when installing that Windows
171 driver.
997cf8b0 172 - Jobs submitted to a class now bounce immediately to
173 the next available printer rather than waiting until
174 that printer is available.
175 - Filters and backends now also get the CLASS
176 environment variable set when a job is printed to a
177 printer class instead of a normal printer.
178 - Added French translations of the web interface, CUPS
179 Overview, Software Administrators Manual, and Software
180 Users Manual contributed by Marian REYT-LLABRES.
6b7de82f 181 - Added several "hint" messages for common configuration
182 problems that are stored in the error_log file.
183 - httpSeparate() now unquotes %xx characters in the
184 username:password field of a URI.
5fe35f41 185 - When starting the scheduler in daemon mode, the parent
186 process now waits for the child to signal it is ready
187 to accept connections.
188 - Added -F option to cupsd to run cupsd in the
189 foreground but detach from the controlling terminal
190 and current directory.
191 - The scheduler did not reload jobs when receiving a HUP
192 signal; this would cause problems since the pointers
193 into the file type database would no longer be valid
194 for existing jobs.
195 - The scheduler did not save the network interface list
196 update time, thus no caching of the network data was
197 actually provided.
198 - Updated the SuSE PAM configuration file.
9ba7fc54 199 - The LPD backend now supports a "reserve" option and no
200 longer reserves a priviledged port by default.
bdfe4c00 201 - The cupsaddsmb command now continues past printers
202 that do not have a PPD file to export.
19f699df 203 - The lpstat command didn't treat printer names as
204 case-insensitive.
205 - The lpstat command now reports the printer location
206 attribute with "lpstat -l -p".
c5488f2f 207 - Fixed a bug in the vsnprintf() emulation function,
208 which was used on old versions of HP-UX, IRIX, and
209 Solaris.
b91c8a76 210 - The number-up option was incorrectly being used when
211 printing banner pages.
4f759211 212 - Added support for Greek and Slovak PPD files.
aa37e40e 213 - CUPS now supports printer names containing any
214 printable character, e.g. "123-abc", "foo-bar", etc.
d958c5cf 215 - The null filter was not supported in mime.convs due to
216 a bug in the filter validation code.
3a74d6bf 217 - Changes in the default printer and printer attributes
218 were not always reflected in the generated printcap
219 file.
8ce19460 220 - Implicit classes did not inherit the location or
221 description from member printers.
fabb006b 222 - The httpGetHostByName() function did not handle
223 hostnames that started with a number.
1f1822fd 224 - Updated the filters to use the %cupsRotation comment
904eef76 225 instead of %%Orientation to auto-rotate pages, since
226 the use of %%Orientation is inconsistent.
d9e72533 227 - Added the RootCertDuration directive to control how
228 often the root authentication certificate is updated.
375a0ad5 229 - Increased the size of the IPP write buffer to 32k to
230 allow for larger attribute values and to provide more
231 efficient output of large numbers of attributes.
7ed5d5f2 232 - The polling daemon now retries the initial connection
233 to the remote server; this fixes a problem when the
234 remote server is unavailable when the scheduler starts
235 up...
19e7b382 236 - The scheduler didn't validate Digest users against the
237 system group(s), so Digest and BasicDigest
238 authentication didn't work for administration
239 operations.
103abc03 240 - The scheduler now passes the SHLIB_PATH environment
241 variable to child processes (HP-UX shared libraries)
06415a96 242 - The scheduler now maps accesses from the loopback
243 interface to "localhost".
244 - The cups-lpd mini-daemon sent a status code byte in
245 response to queue state commands, but those commands
246 only return textual data.
247
248
7680b71d 249CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.15-1
250
251 - The lpc and lprm sources didn't include the CUPS
252 string function header, which is required on systems
253 that don't have their own snprintf() function.
254 - The French manpage Makefile tried to install the
255 language subdirectories when it (obviously) didn't
256 have to.
257
258
74cfdb8b 259CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.15
260
dab1a4d8 261 - Updated the CUPS license agreement for the new MacOS
262 license exception.
611e4623 263 - The printer-info attribute now defaults to the printer
264 name if no value has been set.
52900e4c 265 - ppdOpen() and friends now add an "Auto" InputSlot
266 option if none is provided to automatically select the
267 correct tray.
ed6078a4 268 - Updated the ppdEmit() and ppdEmitFd() functions to
269 (re)mark the correct PageSize or PageRegion option
270 depending on the selected ManualFeed or InputSlot
271 options.
272 - ppdEmitFd() didn't handle custom page sizes.
273 - Darwin uses <pam/pam_appl.h> instead of
274 <security/pam_appl.h>.
fba7409c 275 - The jobs.cgi web interface now handles all job
276 operations, allowing the administrator to allow "job
277 administrators" or operators to manage jobs (but not
278 queues) on the server.
279 - The cupsDoFileRequest() function now checks if the
280 filename passed into the function is a directory, and
281 returns the IPP_NOT_POSSIBLE error if so.
282 - New SCSI printer backend.
a594463b 283 - Cleaned up handling of locales with trailing character
284 set definitions.
a319615f 285 - Fixed handling of invalid PPD attributes inside
286 OpenUI/CloseUI.
b92c5a4f 287 - Fixed a problem with SSL and the job, printer, and
288 admin CGIs on ports other than 443.
b47f3ce5 289 - The scheduler didn't handle AuthClass properly.
e6fc9c68 290 - Added French translation of man pages.
a8ee4682 291 - Updated the text filter to support the const_cast,
292 dynamic_cast, and static_cast keywords in ISO C++.
def978d5 293 - Now use strlcat() and strlcpy() (or emulation
294 functions) for easier string/buffer protection.
7b40ae49 295 - The auto-generated printcap/printers.conf files now
296 have a small comment header explaining where the file
297 comes from...
6df23e27 298 - The PostScript filter now supports 6, 9, and 16-up
ed6078a4 299 output, as well as new page-border and
6df23e27 300 number-up-layout options.
415199da 301 - The lpoptions command didn't set options properly when
302 using the default printer.
303 - Added ConfigFilePerm and LogFilePerm directives.
304 - Increased maximum size of MIME types to IPP_MAX_NAME
305 to allow for longer printer names.
306 - No longer create remote printers when loading job
307 history data.
308 - The printer-make-and-model attribute wasn't set when
309 the PPD file didn't contain a NickName attribute.
310 - Now handle PPD files with translation strings longer
311 than 80 bytes - they are truncated if they go over...
c47e97cc 312 - The scheduler didn't handle signals until after it
313 loaded the configuration files the first time; this
314 caused problems on some installations that would
315 restart the scheduler as the system booted into run
316 level 3.
317 - Now throttle broadcasts like we do for polling.
0203af93 318 - Fixed a bug in the reading of PPD files using CR's
319 instead of CR LF's or LF's.
151718ce 320 - The scheduler would crash if cupsd.conf contained a
321 BrowseProtocols line with no protocols listed.
b05e8e24 322 - The HTML job operation templates now link back to the
323 destination printer or class.
69d74c4b 324 - The serial backend now detects USB serial devices.
238bae16 325 - The LPD mini-daemon (cups-lpd) now passes the
326 job-originating-host-name attribute to the scheduler
327 (cupsd).
a4e23897 328 - Updated the IPP backend to reconnect after downgrading
329 from IPP/1.1 to 1.0, and when sending requests to HP
330 JetDirect interfaces that don't support HTTP
331 Keep-Alive like they should.
1cf29e95 332 - Now pass NLSPATH and DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH environment
333 variables, if defined, to CGI and job processes.
334 - Removed the pstoraster filter (based on GNU
335 Ghostscript 5.50) and now provide the raster "driver"
336 and patch file necessary to use the current GNU
337 Ghostscript 7.05 release.
338 - Removed unnecessary fonts and updated the Courier and
339 Symbol fonts to the latest versions to better support
340 non-ISOLatin1 text.
341 - The text filter now always embeds the Courier and
342 Symbol fonts to ensure that they contain the full set
343 of glyphs.
576b82ca 344 - The lp and lpr commands now only override the SIGINT
345 handler if it is not being ignored (patch from Robert
346 Ambrose for some interactive software that catches
347 SIGINT and will gracefully cancel the print...)
350807be 348 - The PostScript image filter (imagetops) now supports
349 printing CMYK images using the CMYK colorspace.
350 - The image filters now support CMYK JPEG files, and
351 correctly handles the inverted files from Photoshop
352 (which seems to save RGBW data, not CMYK...)
e3bf38b3 353 - Added a "check" target to the top-level makefile to
354 conform with GNU standards (same as "test").
746265a5 355 - The IPP code didn't always map the POSIX locale "C" to
356 the proper IPP language code.
32f78676 357 - The cupsaddsmb program was updated to use the
358 setdriver command instead of addprinter.
934ef66d 359 - Banner pages were not handled properly for implicit
360 classes.
7200e26c 361 - When tunneling to a remote system using SSH, the
362 printer URIs for local printers on the remote system
363 did not reflect the correct port number.
d7a9de63 364 - The Allow, Deny, BrowseAllow, BrowseDeny, and
365 BrowseAddress directives now support the network
366 interface names "@LOCAL" and "@IF(name)" for access
367 control and browsing based on the current interface
368 addresses instead of fixed names or IP addresses.
2a55786c 369 - The texttops filter did not properly recognize the
370 "nowrap" (wrap=false) option.
83575f2d 371 - The InstallableOptions group name in a PPD file is now
372 translated separately (CUPS_MSG_OPTIONS_INSTALLED) so
373 that UIs can accurately detect the presence of this
374 group.
f4647930 375 - The scheduler no longer keeps job history data for
376 remote printers on the client (just on the server.)
4c2096b8 377 - The parallel and USB backends now retry if the backend
378 detects that the printer is not connected to the
379 system (rather than stopping the queue...)
380 - The network backends now retry if the backend detects
381 that the printer is not connected to the network or is
382 unreachable (rather than stopping the queue...)
c672a858 383 - The cupsGetDests() function no longer lists options
384 and instances for printers that no longer exist.
31e65f97 385 - The scheduler now converts the document language to
386 the correct LANG string.
8c47c4b4 387 - The cupsaddsmb program now supports alternative CUPS
388 and SAMBA server names.
40a0e1d1 389 - The PostScript filter now supports the Orientation
390 comment and rotates the page as needed automatically.
f915b00f 391 - Revamped the makefiles slightly to use automatically
392 generated dependencies.
393 - Build fixes for OS X.
a1028786 394 - The TIFF reading code depended on the newest version
395 of libtiff; now conditionally compile that portion of
396 the loader.
bbc1bfe5 397 - The PPD code now decodes all JCL options in the
398 JCLSetup group, not just those options that start with
399 the prefix "JCL".
267cf96a 400 - The backends now read print data using the read()
401 system call to ensure that the current page is printed
402 while the next page is being processed.
2f7be6ff 403 - The pdftops filter did not support shading type 3
404 (radial fill) for the "sh" operator.
dab1a4d8 405 - The cups-polld program now throttles the local
406 broadcasts of polled printers and classes so that the
407 local system is not overwhelmed with hundreds of
408 printers and classes all at once.
409 - Updated the serial backend to support 230,400 baud for
410 the Linux PPC port.
59168282 411 - The cupsGetJobs() function wouldn't report completed
412 jobs that did not have a document-format attribute
413 value.
1c9c423b 414 - The cupsEncodeOptions() function now maintains a table
415 of known boolean and numeric options, and encodes all
416 other options as strings.
f918a565 417 - Now add a newline before the end-of-page code in the
418 PostScript filter; this fixes a problem with files
419 that don't end with a newline.
a28d12c5 420 - The image filters looked for the "orientation" option
421 instead of the correctly named "orientation-requested"
422 option.
74cfdb8b 423 - The cupsEncodeOptions() function now handles mixed
424 integers and ranges.
425 - New translation guide for developers to provide native
426 language support for CUPS.
427
428
ee8b7dd3 429CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.14
430
843779ef 431 - The ippRead() function did not verify that the
ba31b514 432 attribute name length or string with language value
433 was not larger than the read buffer.
e2943c5f 434 - The scheduler set the signal handlers before loading
435 the configuration files the first time; this prevented
436 the RunAsUser directive from blocking server reloads.
5fd84fcc 437 - Added Swedish message catalog.
0e1f4bec 438 - The parallel backend now recognizes the /dev/printers
439 device directory under Linux 2.4.x.
ba31b514 440 - MacOS X fixes.
441 - The cupsaddsmb utility sent the server name after the
442 user information when executing the rpcclient program.
443 This caused problems with some versions of SAMBA
444 2.2.x.
ee8b7dd3 445 - The IPP backend did not pass the requesting user name
446 when checking on the print job status. This prevented
447 it from waiting for the job to complete when
448 communicating with some IPP implementations that
449 require it.
450
451
d2503e02 452CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.13
453
28a96fe2 454 - The lpstat command did not report jobs submitted to
455 regular printer classes.
0f74081c 456 - The texttops filter didn't use sufficient precision
457 when positioning text with some values of cpi and lpi.
458 This could cause the alignment of text to stray.
0ffae44c 459 - cupsGetDests() didn't merge the options from the
460 /etc/cups/lpoptions file with ~/.lpoptions - options
461 in ~/.lpoptions overrode them completely.
462 - Added support for KOI8-R and KOI8-U character sets,
463 and added several Russian message catalogs.
bd726d0d 464 - The scheduler put the wrong timezone offset in the log
465 files (e.g. +0500 instead of -0500 for EST...)
466 - The scheduler did not ignore trailing whitespace in
467 *.convs files.
db911fcb 468 - The scheduler now forces all processes to exit (kill
469 -9) when it is stopped. This prevents parallel and
470 USB devices from running in the background after cupsd
471 goes away.
7c587866 472 - The cupsParseOptions() function didn't skip trailing
473 whitespace after quoted values.
c3026ddc 474 - More changes to support CUPS on OS/2.
24e80caf 475 - Added Simplified Chinese message catalog.
9495ba14 476 - Added PAM support for IRIX.
c6e1ca5d 477 - The cupsGetPPD() function didn't remove the @server
478 portion of the printer name, and since it would
479 connect immediately to the remote server instead of
480 the local server, the printer would not be found.
8b8cca8e 481 - Classification and page labels were not rotated to
482 match the page orientation.
9ae34eb7 483 - Now set the TCP "no delay" option on network
484 connections to improve performance/response time.
485 - Improved the IRIX printing tools support with patches
486 from Andrea Suatoni.
487 - Added a new PrintcapGUI directive to specify the GUI
488 option panel program to use for the IRIX printing
489 tools support.
490 - The cupsGetDests() function did not check to see if a
491 user-defined default printer (set via lpoptions) still
492 existed.
493 - The pstops filter no longer assumes that the default
494 dictionary is writable when doing N-up processing.
bbfcd9c7 495 - The pstops filter now supports printing N-up with the
496 page-set option.
873a6f43 497 - The imagetoraster filter now supports direct printing
498 of CMYK image data without conversion/correction.
d1c2727f 499 - The IPP backend now reports printer state/error
500 conditions when possible (toner low, media empty,
501 etc.)
bd73c81f 502 - The lpstat command now supports the (undocumented)
503 IRIX -l option ("-lprintername") for a compact job
504 listing for a printer.
505 - The lpstat command now includes printer date/time
506 information in the output (always Jan 01 00:00) to
507 make third-party tools happy.
18843e59 508 - The text filter now supports non-integer cpi and lpi
509 values.
dd5f3453 510 - The Margins field in the CUPS raster header was not
511 initialized by the pstoraster filter.
9aa1f763 512 - Added --with-optim="flags" option to configure script.
513 - Updated the Italian message translations.
514 - Updated the cups.list file to install the correct
515 files.
516 - The pstoraster filter accessed the third element of a
517 2 element array.
5f46b7d1 518 - The scheduler did not setup a status pipe for polling
519 processes, so error messages went to whatever file
520 descriptor 2 was pointing to when they were started.
5fb5dab7 521 - The httpMD5Final() function didn't put a colon between
522 the password and nonce strings.
c5de57af 523 - The pstops filter did not default to Binary data for
524 "%%BeginData:".
4a7e6692 525 - The pstops filter did not stop processing when a line
526 containing a CTRL-D is seen.
aba2fa7e 527 - The scheduler no longer replaces the JobSheets values
528 from the printers.conf and classes.conf files with the
529 classification level, if set. This way the original
530 banner settings are preserved when classification
531 levels are changed or turned off.
8d5eb22e 532 - The serial backend didn't drain the output queue, nor
533 did it restore the original settings.
d2503e02 534 - Updated the default system group under MacOS X.
535 - If no SystemGroup was defined in cupsd.conf, the
536 system default group was not used.
537 - The cups-lpd mini-daemon now supports LPD clients that
538 send multiple control files.
539 - httpConnectEncrypt() now always uses encryption for
540 connections on port 443, since port 443 is reserved
541 for the "https" scheme.
542 - Group authentication via certificates did not work
543 from the web interface for accounts other than
544 "root".
545 - The serial port backend did not clear the OPOST
546 option, which could cause problems with some printers.
547 - The cups-lpd mini-daemon didn't lookup the client IP
548 address properly.
549 - The parallel backend now identifies the polled and
550 interrupt-driven devices under *BSD.
551 - The scheduler allowed the "always" encryption mode
552 inside a Location, which is not valid.
553 - The CUPS startup script now checks for the timezone
554 information under Linux.
555 - Now also map the sides attribute to the JCLDuplex
556 option (if present) in PPD files.
557 - Updated pdftops to Xpdf 0.93a.
558 - Added support for MD5 passwords under Slackware.
559 - Added new AuthType BasicDigest that does Basic
560 authentication using the MD5 password file managed by
561 the lppasswd command.
562 - The banner page attribute substitution code now
563 retains {name} sequences in banner files when the
564 named attribute is undefined. Use {?name} to
565 conditionally substitute an IPP attribute.
566 - The scheduler now ensures that the ServerRoot
567 directory and configuration files are owned by and
568 writable by the User and Group in cupsd.conf.
569 - The USB backend now lists all USB printer devices
570 regardless of whether a printer is connected or not.
571 This allows new USB printers to be connected without
572 restarting cupsd.
573 - Added some more minor performance tweeks to the IPP
574 protocol code to reduce copying and array indexing.
575 - The cupsaddsmb utility now uses the -c option with
576 smbclient and rpcclient to avoid the read length limit
577 for commands on the standard input.
578 - Added an include file to the CRD handling code in
579 pstoraster so that it would compile properly on 64-bit
580 pointer platforms...
581
582
583CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.12
584
585 - Added "Polish" to the list of known languages for PPD
586 files.
587 - Added missing directory definition to cups-config.
588 - The CUPS-Move-Job operation did not set the
589 destination type for the new destination.
590 - The CUPS-Add-Printer operation did not support the
591 allow=all or deny=none values to clear the per-user
592 printer ACLs.
593 - The SetPrinterAttrs() function did not handle invalid
594 PPD files that were missing the required NickName
595 attribute. It now looks for NickName, ModelName, and
596 then substitutes the string "Bad PPD File" for the
597 printer-make-and-model attribute.
598
599
600CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.11
601
602 - Added support for embedded TrueType fonts in PDF
603 files.
604 - Added support for PostScript functions in PDF
605 files.
606 - Added new "cupsaddsmb" utility for exporting
607 CUPS printer drivers to SAMBA/Windows clients.
608 - Added preliminary support for Darwin/MacOS X.
609 - The CUPS-Add-Printer operation no longer allows
610 arbitrary scheme names in device URIs to be used - it
611 now restricts the available schemes to those found in
612 the device list (lpinfo -m).
613 - The ippRead() and ipp_read_file() functions could not
614 handle more than IPP_MAX_VALUES (100) values in a
615 1setOf attribute. These functions have been updated
616 to dynamically allocate more memory as needed, and the
617 IPP_MAX_VALUES constant now represents the allocation
618 increment. [this caused some versions of the
619 GIMP-print drivers to fail since the number of media
620 options exceeded 100...]
621 - The scheduler could crash when BrowseShortNames
622 was set to "No".
623 - The scheduler did not prevent MaxClients from being
624 set to 0, which could cause the scheduler to go in an
625 infinite loop when accepting a request.
626 - Made some performance optimizations in the ippRead()
627 functions to make IPP request/response processing
628 faster.
629 - The accept/reject/enable/disable command did not
630 support properly support the "-h" or default
631 server name.
632 - The scheduler did not save the quota configuration
633 when the job-quota-period attribute was set to 0.
634 - The LPDEST and PRINTER environment variables did not
635 support printer instances.
636 - The text filter now handles more types of boldface and
637 underline formatting.
638 - The cupsTempFd() function did not fail if the
639 temporary directory did not exist; this would cause it
640 to loop indefinitely instead of returning an error
641 (-1).
642 - Stopping (disabling) a printer class did not stop jobs
643 from printing to printers in that class.
644 - The cupsGetDests() function was sending the
645 requested-attributes attribute as a name instead of a
646 keyword; this caused a serious performance problem on
647 slower systems since more information had to be
648 transferred from server to client.
649 - The web interfaces did not always quote < and & in
650 things like the job title. This had the potential for
651 browser-based security violations (on the browser's
652 machine); bug report from SuSE.
653 - The scheduler now treats unauthenticated usernames as
654 case-insensitive when doing quota and allow/deny
655 processing.
656 - The lp command sent the "request ID is ..." message
657 to stderr instead of stdout...
658 - The PostScript filter (pstops) now handles EPS files,
659 adding a showpage command to the files as needed.
660 - The configure script checked for the <stdlib.h> header
661 file before the JPEG libraries; since the JPEG headers
662 can define HAVE_STDLIB_H, the configure check would
663 cause the JPEG check to fail on some systems.
664 - The scheduler now supports localized banner files,
665 using the subdirectory approach, e.g. the "es"
666 subdirectory under /usr/share/cups/banners is used for
667 the Spanish banner files.
668 - Updated the scheduler so it knows the correct
669 language abbreviation to use for all supported
670 PPD LanguageVersion values. The new code also
671 supports country codes as well, so "English-GB"
672 maps to the "en_GB" locale.
673 - The cups-lpd mini-daemon did not support
674 anonymous printing (no username specified).
675 While the username is REQUIRED by RFC-1179,
676 MacOS clients do not send the REQUIRED username
677 information when printing via LPD.
678 - Added many warning and informational messages
679 to cups-lpd where they were missing.
680 - Added Czech message file contributed by SuSE.
681 - The cups-lpd mini-daemon now returns a non-zero
682 status if an invalid destination or job ID is
683 provided.
684 - The scheduler did not honor the KeepAlive setting in
685 cupsd.conf.
686 - Increased the size of the file read/write buffers to
687 32k.
688 - *BSD static library creation fixes.
689 - Use mkstemps() instead of tmpnam() in pdftops whenever
690 possible.
691 - Added httpGetHostByName() function as a wrapper around
692 gethostbyname() - some implementations of this
693 function do not support IP addresses (e.g. MacOS X.)
694 - Added casts to all printf's of file lengths, since
695 there is currently no standard way of formatting long
696 long values.
697 - The client filename field was not cleared in all
698 instances, resulting in old form data being submitted
699 to CGIs.
700 - The httpConnect*() functions now try all available
701 addresses for a host when connecting for the first
702 time.
703 - The pstoraster filter would "lose" all drawing
704 commands when the PageSize was set but the printer
705 bitmap was not reallocated. This was most noticeable
706 with the output from StarOffice 6 beta and would
707 result in a blank page being output...
708 - The IPP backend was sending a PAGE comment even when
709 printing the output from a filter (it should only send
710 page comments when printing files directly...)
711 - The pdftops filter didn't properly map glyph names of
712 embedded Asian TrueType fonts.
713 - Changed the CUPS startup script to look for a program
714 named "cupsd", not just any program with "cupsd" in
715 the name (this caused the apcupsd UPS monitoring
716 daemon to be stopped/restarted...)
717 - The CUPS-Move-Job operation did not change the
718 internal destination name for held jobs, so moved (but
719 held) jobs would still show up as queued on the
720 original destination.
721 - The cups-polld program didn't send the
722 requested-attributes attribute in the
723 CUPS-Get-Printers and CUPS-Get-Classes requests, which
724 made it use more CPU and bandwidth than required.
725 - The scheduler and CUPS API incorrectly added a
726 job-sheets-default attribute for remote printers. This
727 caused banner pages to be omitted from client system
728 prints.
729
730
731CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.10-1
732
733 - Minor fixes to the filter, systemv, and template
734 makefiles to install files properly.
735
736
737CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.10
738
739 - Added a driver for DYMO label printers.
740 - Added new ClassifyOverride directive to allow users
741 to override the classification of individual jobs.
742 - Added new BrowseProtocols directive to control which
743 browse protocols are used (currently CUPS and SLP).
744 - Added SLPv2 support (thanks to Matt Peterson for
745 contributing the initial implementation for CUPS.)
746 - Adding a raw printer on a remote CUPS server now
747 correctly redirects PPD file requests to the remote
748 server.
749 - The serial backend now limits writes to 1/10th
750 second worth of data to avoid buffer overflows
751 with some types of flow control.
752 - The scheduler did not properly process PUT requests,
753 so configuration files could not be uploaded to the
754 server.
755 - The scheduler did not strip trailing whitespace on
756 lines in the configuration files.
757 - The httpWrite() function did not transition the PUT
758 request to the HTTP_STATUS state to get the status
759 from the server.
760 - The scheduler did not properly handle trailing null
761 ("-") filters when testing a driver that sent data
762 to the file: pseudo-backend.
763 - The IPP backend now only sends a document-format of
764 "application/vnd.cups-raw" when printing to another
765 CUPS server using a local printer driver or interface
766 script. Previously the job's document format was
767 used, which was incorrect.
768 - The lpadmin command didn't use the ppd-name attribute
769 with the -m option; this prevented the use of the
770 "raw" model from the command-line.
771 - The pstoraster filter output draft (1-bit) 6-color
772 output in the wrong order; this resulted in yellow
773 being printed instead of black on Stylus Photo
774 printers.
775 - The pdftops filter did not have the Japanese and
776 Chinese text support compiled into it.
777 - The IPP and AppSocket backends did not clear the
778 "waiting for print job to complete" status message,
779 which caused some confusion... :)
780 - The serial backend now opens the port in "no delay"
781 mode to avoid DCD detection problems with some OS's.
782
783
784CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.9-1
785
786 - The configure script did not substitute the
787 correct user and group names.
788 - The configure script did not use the full path
789 to the install-sh script when it was used.
790 - The pstoraster filter did not correctly support
791 DuplexTumble mode for printers that used flip
792 duplexing.
793 - The cups.list.in file was missing from the
794 distribution.
795 - The New DeskJet series driver did not use the
796 correct OrderDependency for the Duplex option.
797 - Use read() instead of fread() to read piped
798 print files in lpr/lp. This avoids a bug in the
799 HP-UX 10.20 fread() function.
800 - Updated the pstoraster filter to use the MIPS_FIXADE
801 system call under IRIX to fix bus error problems on
802 R12000 processors (Ghostscript is not 64-bit clean...)
803 - Some Xerox PPD files (most notably the Phaser 790)
804 have illegal whitespace in the option keyword in the
805 OpenUI line. This caused the PageRegion option to not
806 be recognized properly for the Phaser 790.
807
808
809CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.9
810
811 - Revamped the configure script to use a modular
812 approach for the various tests.
813 - Added --with-openssl-* options to properly reference
814 the OpenSSL libraries in DSOs.
815 - Added --with-cups-user and --with-cups-group
816 options to specify the default user and group for
817 CUPS.
818 - Added AIX shared library support.
819 - Added AIX device discovery for the serial and
820 parallel ports.
821 - Now use install program or script to install
822 directories, files, and symlinks.
823 - Updated pstops filter to use strict handling of EPS
824 files embedded in a PostScript document. The %%EOF
825 handling in 1.1.8 caused some dvips files not to
826 print.
827 - Fixed yet another memory allocation bug in pstoraster
828 that would cause it to crash. This fix also ensures
829 that all memory allocations are done on (at least) a
830 64-bit boundary.
831 - Fixed Digest authentication - httpGetSubField() didn't
832 skip the Digest keyword.
833 - The scheduler did not properly handle Digest
834 authentication with the new multiple-group support.
835 - The scheduler did not allow usernames that were
836 not in the UNIX password file to be used for Digest
837 authentication from passwd.md5.
838 - The scheduler could not scan PPD files that only used
839 a carriage return (i.e. MacOS PPD files); the new code
840 is also about 40% faster, so servers with thousands of
841 PPD files should start much faster now.
842 - The scheduler now stores the PPD file size and
843 modification times in the ppds.dat file, so it can now
844 incrementally update the PPD database from the model
845 directory, resulting in significantly faster startup
846 times.
847 - The lpinfo command did not return a non-zero status
848 code if an error occurred.
849 - Fixed a bug in the scheduler's UpdateJob() function.
850 Basically, all jobs shared the same status buffer, and
851 the "buffer start" pointer could point to 1 byte
852 before the beginning of the buffer. The new
853 implementation uses a separate buffer for each job and
854 eliminates the buffer start bug.
855 - The IPP backend would send N copies of a document if
856 the receiving device didn't support the copies
857 attribute, even if the upstream driver already added
858 the necessary commands to generate the copies. This
859 was most noticeable with HP printers where N * N
860 copies would come out instead of N.
861 - The PostScript filter (pstops) did not properly handle
862 duplex printing on inkjet printers that provide this
863 option. Copies would be put on the front and back
864 sides of the duplexed page, and the filter did not
865 output an even number of pages.
866 - The backends always caught SIGTERM after they
867 connected to the printer. This prevented raw jobs
868 from being cancelled early.
869 - The cupsSetDests() function now removes any printers,
870 instances, and options that are not defined by the
871 user or server. This should prevent old system-wide
872 options from being used in individual user accounts.
873 - Updated the EPSON printer driver and added PPDs for
874 the newer EPSON Stylus printers that only support the
875 "ESC i" graphics command.
876 - The lpadmin command didn't allow you to add remote
877 printers to a local class.
878 - The lpadmin command didn't allow you to set the
879 options (quotas, etc.) for a class.
880 - The scheduler did not load or save the
881 job-sheets-default attribute for classes.
882 - The scheduler did not automatically recreate remote
883 printers that were part of a class.
884 - It was possible for a printer class to list the same
885 printer more than once.
886 - The scheduler now makes a backup copy of classes.conf
887 and printers.conf before writing the new file.
888 - The lppasswd program incorrectly asked for a new
889 password when deleting an existing MD5 password
890 account.
891 - The scheduler did not match "/printers/name.ppd"
892 against a location of "/printers/name".
893 - The client code did not always handle HTTP encryption
894 upgrades properly.
895 - The client code now caches the last Digest password so
896 it can retry using a new resource path or nonce value,
897 which are included in the MD5 sum sent to the server.
898 This should eliminate unnecessary password prompts
899 when using Digest authentication.
900 - The lppasswd command didn't have a man page.
901 - Updated the PJL detection rules to allow the universal
902 escape to occur anywhere in the first 128 bytes of the
903 file.
904 - The cups-polld program would poll servers continuously
905 with no delay if there was an error contacting the
906 server.
907 - The IPP backend would send an empty job-name or
908 requesting-user-name attribute if the corresponding
909 job attribute was an empty string. While this is
910 allowed by the IPP specification, some HP JetDirect
911 implementations return a client-error-bad-request
912 error if an empty name attribute value is received.
913 The new code only sends these attributes if they are
914 not the empty string.
915 - At least some versions of the HP JetDirect firmware
916 do not correctly implement IPP. Added additional
917 checks to the IPP backend to eliminate extra,
918 unsupported attributes which should normally be
919 ignored by a compliant IPP device.
920 - The scheduler did not copy the complete list of
921 supported file types into the
922 document-format-supported attribute. This caused
923 clients to not send the local file type (such as
924 application/vnd.cups-raw for raw print files) and the
925 corresponding bad output in some cases.
926 - The scheduler did not fully copy attributes from a
927 set-job-attributes request - string attributes were
928 only referenced, which could cause cupsd to crash
929 or behave irratically.
930 - The lp command didn't send the right value for the
931 job-hold-until attribute when "-H resume" was
932 specified.
933 - The IPP backend now returns as soon as a job is
934 completed or reported as "pending-held".
935 - Added new ImplicitAnyClasses and HideImplicitMembers
936 directives to the cupsd.conf file to make implicit
937 classes more usable/transparent to the user.
938 - Clients can now (with the appropriate authentication)
939 retrieve and update the server configuration files
940 using HTTP GET and PUT requests.
941 - The web interface didn't allow you to modify the
942 location or description of the printer.
943 - The pdftops filter now uses its own temporary file
944 function to work with PDF files using LZW compression
945 (which use the uncompress program or gunzip)
946 - The SystemGroup directive now supports specification of
947 multiple groups.
948 - Added new Include directive to cupsd.conf, a la
949 Apache.
950 - Added new pseudo-driver/PPD called "raw" that can be
951 used to create/convert a raw queue. This also allows
952 raw queues to be created in the web interface.
953 - The pdftops filter didn't handle image objects that
954 used JPEG and Flate compression together.
955 - The pstops filter counted pages wrong when using the
956 N-up and even/odd printing options. This prevented
957 the page-ranges option from working properly.
958 - Added another fix to pstoraster for a bus error
959 condition caused by a lack of parenthesis in the
960 Ghostscript code.
961 - Added new "natural-scaling" option which scales the
962 natural size of the image (percent of natural image
963 size instead of percent of page size.)
964 - The lppasswd program is now setuid to the CUPS user
965 instead of root.
966 - The PPD functions did not allow for PPD files that
967 defined the page sizes and margins before the page
968 size options.
969 - The mime.types file now checks for the PJL "LANGUAGE =
970 Postscript" command for PostScript files.
971 - The scheduler did not truncate file: output files.
972 - The PPD file reading code did not handle options with
973 raw quotes (") in the human-readable names.
974 - The pdftops filter now remaps the space character when
975 (bad) PDF files contain a .notdef glyph for the space
976 character.
977
978
979CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.8
980
981 - Updated spec file to generate separate cups-pstoraster
982 package for pstoraster.
983 - The spec file wasn't setting LOGDIR in the install.
984 - The scheduler might restart a stopped printer after
985 stopping a print job. Thanks to Florent
986 Guiliani for finding this bug!
987 - The init script showed run level 0 for the Red Hat
988 chkconfig program. This is incorrect because Red Hat
989 doesn't use run level 0 for shutdown scripts.
990 - The IPP backend did not handle the
991 client-error-not-found error when checking the status
992 of the job that was sent. This caused remote queues
993 to stop on client machines when the server had job
994 history disabled.
995 - Added httpConnectEncrypt() function to avoid
996 performance penalty for setting up encrypted
997 connections initially.
998 - Use httpConnectEncrypt() in all client apps and in the
999 CUPS API to ensure consistent usage of encryption
1000 throughout.
1001 - Jobs weren't queued to remote classes (fix from
1002 Richard Begg.)
1003 - AIX changes from Richard Begg.
1004 - Fixed the pstops fix for GNOME output - no longer use
1005 the page numbers in the %%Page: comment since GNOME
1006 puts a filename instead (!?@!#?!). There is still an
1007 issue with N-up printing since GNOME defines its fonts
1008 in the first page instead of the document setup section
1009 (pages must be independent according to the DSC spec)
1010 People with GNOME printing problems should consult bug
1011 #54489...
1012 - The imagetops filter produced PAGE: messages when
1013 generating PostScript for a non-PostScript printer
1014 (only affects page-label and Classification
1015 options.)
1016 - The updated pdftops filter was looking for an options
1017 file called xpdf.conf instead of pdftops.conf.
1018
1019
1020CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.7
1021
1022 - Configuration script changes, including new
1023 "--with-docdir=/dir" option to relocate CUPS
1024 documentation and web content according to your
1025 favorite version of the FHS.
1026 - Documentation updates for encryption, SLP, etc.
1027 - New Software Test Plan and automated test script to
1028 test CUPS prior to installation.
1029 - All scheduler configuration files are now case
1030 insensitive to match Apache.
8372ad6b 1031 - Added support for Apache ListenBackLog, Require,
1032 Satisfy, <Limit>, <LimitExcept>, and LimitRequestSize
d2503e02 1033 directives.
1034 - Added support for all Apache log levels...
1035 - Added support for "double" HostNameLookups.
1036 - Added new "RunAsUser" directive to support non-root
1037 configurations on the standard (priviledged) ports.
1038 - Added support for non-root invocation of the lpd
1039 backend (does no reserve a priviledged port, which
1040 might not work with some LPD servers...)
1041 - Added new PrintcapFormat directive to control the
1042 output format of the printcap file (BSD or Solaris
1043 formats are supported at present.)
1044 - The CUPS directory service routines now handle
1045 ECONNREFUSED errors gracefully rather than shutting
1046 all browsing off.
1047 - ippErrorString() now returns the recommended error
1048 messages from the IPP/1.1 Model and Semantics
1049 document.
1050 - Fixed a minor IPP compliance issue with responses
1051 to requests without the attributes-charset or
1052 attributes-natural-language attributes.
1053 - Sun fix: need httpFlush() call for chunked IPP
1054 requests in cupsDoFileRequest().
1055 - httpConnect() now looks up "localhost" by name and
1056 by address (127.0.0.1) for users the go to the
1057 trouble of removing the required localhost entry
1058 in /etc/hosts or on their DNS server...
1059 - Added support for Linux 2.4.x devfs parallel port
1060 filenames (/dev/parallel/N).
1061 - cupsDo[File]Request() and cupsGetPPD() no longer
1062 block trying to reconnect to a crashed or inaccessable
1063 server.
1064 - Added new ppdEmitJCL() function to better handle
1065 PJL commands from PPD files.
1066 - A bug in UpdateJob() would cause the scheduler to
1067 consume 100% CPU until another request was submitted.
1068 - The cancel command did not support the "-" option to
1069 cancel all jobs on all printers.
1070 - The cancel and lprm commands did not support cancelling
1071 the next/current job in the queue.
1072 - The pdftops and pstoraster filters were using unsafe
1073 temporary file functions; while this is not a problem
1074 in normal configurations (the CUPS temporary directory
1075 is restricted), they now use the cupsTempFd() function.
1076 - The mime.types file was missing the recognition rule
1077 for Sun Raster images.
1078 - The admin CGI was passing a printer make string to
1079 ippSetCGIVars() that was being replaced in that
1080 function.
1081 - "lpoptions -l" would resave the options...
1082 - The EPSON drivers now send the "end packet mode"
1083 command when printing to USB devices.
1084 - The scheduler initialized certificates before loading
1085 the cupsd.conf file.
1086 - The scheduler used /dev/random to collect random data,
1087 which could block if insufficient entropy information
1088 had been collected by the kernel. Now use
1089 /dev/urandom.
1090 - Fixed a bug in the whitespace skipping code in
1091 httpGetSubField().
1092 - The LPD backend now supports a new "order" option:
1093 "lpd://server/queue?order=control,data" (default) and
1094 "lpd://server/queue?order=data,control".
1095 - The scheduler enforced a 30 second timeout on all
1096 clients regardless of the Timeout directive and if a
1097 CGI was currently running.
1098 - cupsParseOptions() now sets boolean options to
1099 option=true or option=false.
1100 - The "percent complete" calculations in the LPD backend
1101 could overflow on large files, causing the percentage
1102 to wrap to 0 every 40MB or so.
1103 - Fixed a memory reallocation bug in pstoraster that
1104 could cause it to crash.
1105 - The LPD backend now sanitizes the job title to avoid
1106 potential problems on remote LPD servers.
1107 - The lp command did not send the requesting-user-name
1108 attribute when altering a job.
1109 - The pstops filter did not handle PostScript files with
1110 lines longer than 8191 bytes.
1111 - The scheduler no longer uses inet_addr() to convert IP
1112 addresses in dot format (mmm.nnn.ooo.ppp) to the
1113 32-bit format, since it will not work for IPv6
1114 addresses.
1115 - New "Classification" directive to force labeling of
1116 the current classification on each page.
1117 - New "page-label" attribute to add per-page labels
1118 ("For Official Use Only", "Draft", etc.)
1119 - The scheduler now sets the HTTPS environment variable
1120 for CGI programs when a client connects using
1121 encryption.
1122 - Fixed a recursion bug in the scheduler that could
1123 cause cupsd to crash when a printer was removed.
1124 - The LPDEST and PRINTER environment variables didn't
1125 support instances.
1126 - Dropped the "file" backend from the device list that
1127 is reported, since it is only available for *testing*
1128 and should never be used in a production environment.
1129 The file: device can still be used, but it won't show
1130 up in the list of devices from lpinfo or the web
1131 interface.
1132 - Added support for /dev/lpa# parallel ports under *BSD.
1133 - Added META variables to the CGI header template to
1134 prevent caching of the results.
1135 - Fixed an unaligned memory buffer for the pstoraster
1136 clist states; this caused bus errors for some
1137 combinations of printers, drivers, and options.
1138 - Re-added black reduction for colorful colors; this
1139 helps to prevent dark colors from getting desaturated.
1140 (only used when converting RGB to CMYK)
1141 - Added two new directives - MaxJobsPerPrinter and
1142 MaxJobsPerUser - to allow an administrator to set
1143 the maximum number of pending jobs in a queue or
1144 submitted by a user.
1145 - The scheduler no longer stops a printer if it can't
1146 create the status pipe or run the filters or backend.
1147 This will allow heavily loaded servers to service
1148 clients or start print jobs as the load allows.
1149 - Fixed a bug in the Set-Job-Attributes code that could
1150 crash the scheduler (patch from Martin Zielinski)
1151 - cupsSetDests() did not quote option values with
1152 embedded spaces.
1153 - Added support for the Enable-Printer and
1154 Disable-Printer extension operations (same as
1155 CUPS-Accept-Jobs and CUPS-Reject-Jobs.)
1156 - The AppSocket and IPP backends now wait for the print
1157 job to be finished before exiting; this should prevent
1158 the loss of print jobs with older JetDirect firmware
1159 and make consecutive print jobs print faster.
1160 - The BMP loading code did not handle resolution values
1161 of 0. This is a problem with BMP image files produced
1162 by the GIMP.
1163 - The HTTP Upgrade code (upgrade to TLS encryption)
1164 bypassed the authentication checks.
1165 - The HTTP Upgrade code did not send a 426 status code
1166 to the client and end the current request. This caused
1167 a race condition between the client and server for the
1168 upgrade to TLS.
1169 - Fixed a bug in the EOF and Trailer detection code in
1170 the pstops filter.
1171 - The imagetoraster filter did not add the margins to
1172 the custom page size in the raster header.
1173 - The imagetops filter did not adjust the custom page
1174 size to the size of the printed image.
1175 - The imagetops filter did not include DSC comments
1176 which are required by some printers.
1177 - The imagetops filter did not insert newlines in
1178 Base85 encoded output, causing files to contain
1179 lines longer than 255 characters (violation of the
1180 DSC).
1181 - Added support for the DeskJet 900 series duplexer
1182 and CRET color modes in the HP driver.
1183 - Added support for PPD-defined margins in the HP
1184 driver.
1185 - Fixed the debugging output from pstoraster - the
1186 font list was not terminated by a newline.
1187 - Some versions of the HP-UX pam_unix authentication
1188 module apparently do not pass the appdata_ptr argument
1189 to the conversation function, preventing the scheduler
1190 from authenticating users using PAM under HP-UX. A
1191 workaround using a static variable has been added to
1192 address this problem.
1193 - Fixed a bug in the scheduler SortPrinters() function
1194 that could cause printers to disappear or the
1195 scheduler to crash when adding a printer.
1196 - Changed the pstops filter to not do per-page filtering
1197 if the file does not conform to at least version 3.0
1198 of the document structuring conventions. This seems
1199 to "fix" printing with broken apps.
1200 - The image filters did not handle older TIFF files that
1201 lacked the samples-per-pixel and bits-per-pixel tags.
1202 - Added new cupsGetJobs() and cupsFreeJobs() functions
1203 to manage print jobs.
1204 - cupsEncodeOptions() would encode names of 0 length and
1205 cupsAddOption() and cupsParseOptions() would add names
1206 of 0 length.
1207 - The scheduler might block waiting for status messages
1208 after starting a new print job. Thanks to Florent
1209 Guiliani for finding this bug!
1210
1211
1212CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.6-3
1213
1214 - The configure script put the JPEG library before the
1215 TIFF library; this caused problems in some
1216 configurations since the TIFF library also supports
1217 JPEG compression of TIFF images.
1218 - Updated the configure script and makefiles to handle
1219 admin man pages with the "1m" extension (HP-UX, IRIX,
1220 Solaris, Tru64) and in odd directories (IRIX)
1221 - The updated cupsTempFile() function did not return
1222 the filename when called with a filename buffer of
1223 NULL (previously it used a static buffer.)
1224 - FreeBSD uses /dev/unlptN, but NetBSD and OpenBSD use
1225 /dev/ulptN.
1226 - DeletePrinter() didn't remove the printer from any
1227 classes it was a member of.
1228 - DeletePrinterFromClass() didn't preserve the
1229 implicit status of a class.
1230 - DeletePrinterFromClasses() didn't remove printers
1231 from implicit classes.
1232 - StartJob() didn't send the job-sheets, job-priority,
1233 and job-hold-until attributes to remote printers.
1234 - LoadAllJobs() was looking for job-sheets-completed
1235 instead of job-media-sheets-completed. This would
1236 prevent accumulation of page data after a restart
1237 of the scheduler.
1238 - The pstops and imagetops filters now generate copies
1239 using the appropriate method for a Level 1, 2, or 3
1240 printer since some Level 2/3 printers don't support
1241 the /#copies variable anymore.
1242 - The man page for cups-lpd did not mention the "-o"
1243 option.
1244 - The IPP backend didn't handle version-not-supported
1245 errors and revert to IPP/1.0 (previously it only checked
1246 for a bad-request error)
1247 - Caldera fix: lpc now reports unimplemented commands as
1248 unimplemented, not invalid.
1249 - Caldera fix: lpq didn't recognize BSD lpq "-a" option.
1250 - Caldera fix: lpr didn't recognize BSD lpr "-1", "-2",
1251 "-3", "-4", "-q", or "-U" options.
1252 - RedHat fixes: patches to GNU Ghostscript
1253 - SuSE fix: temp file creation patch to GNU Ghostscript
1254 (pstoraster).
1255 - SuSE fix: remove cgi-bin/abort.c and cgi-bin/email.c,
1256 which are not used.
1257 - SuSE fix: missing NULL check in cgi_initialize_post().
1258 - SuSE fix: potential buffer overflows in
1259 cgi_initialize_string().
1260 - SuSE fix: potential buffer overflows in
1261 ippSetCGIVars()
1262 - SuSE fix: more NULL checks in ppdOpen(); also make
1263 sure that all memory is freed on error to avoid memory
1264 leaks.
1265 - SuSE fix: Exit from child if setgid() or setuid()
1266 fails.
1267 - SuSE fix: Added setgroups() calls after setgid() and
1268 setuid() calls.
1269 - SuSE fix: potential buffer overflows in httpEncode64()
1270 calls.
1271 - SuSE fix: potential buffer overflows in httpSeparate()
1272 - SuSE fix: potential buffer overflows in ippWrite() for
1273 bad input.
1274 - SuSE fix: potential nul skip in ppd_decode() for
1275 missing hex digits.
1276
1277
1278CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.6-2
1279
1280 - Added changes to support NetBSD startup scripts.
1281 - Added separate compiler options for pstoraster
1282 (Ghostscript) to avoid compiler-induced errors
1283 from Ghostscript's twisted code.
1284 - The mime.types file contained syntax errors.
1285 - Updated the *BSD USB device filenames to use
1286 the /dev/unlptN files so that the USB device
1287 is not reset prior to printing (causes print
1288 corruption on many printers)
1289 - Added new cupsTempFd() function to avoid serious
1290 security bug in glibc fopen() function. The glibc
1291 fopen() function unlinks a file before creating it,
1292 which opens up possible symlink attacks.
1293 - Now reject 0-length names in add-printer and add-class
1294 requests.
1295 - Fix for pstoraster when ZLIB is not available.
1296 - cupsGetPPD() didn't reconnect when a HTTP connection
1297 was lost.
1298 - SuSE fix: httpConnect() didn't check that the
1299 value from gethostbyname() was a valid IPv4 address.
1300 - SuSE fix: httpConnect() didn't allow file descriptor 0
1301 to be used for a socket.
1302 - SuSE fix: ippRead() didn't confirm that all values in
1303 a set were numeric or string types.
1304 - SuSE fix: lppasswd race condition fixes.
1305 - SuSE fix: directive names could overflow buffer when
1306 reading *.conf files.
1307 - SuSE fix: HEAD requests for PPD files did not use the
1308 same logic as GET requests.
1309 - SuSE fix: possible buffer overflow when adding
1310 /index.html to requested directory name.
1311 - SuSE fix: possible buffer overflow when converting
1312 IPP attributes to string options for filters.
1313 - SuSE fix: creating file: device output with mode 0666
1314 instead of mode 0600.
1315 - SuSE fix: creating job info files with mode 0640
1316 instead of 0600.
1317 - SuSE fix: don't rely on snprintf() for including
1318 system name in log filenames.
1319 - SuSE fix: add bounds checking when copying quoted
1320 and hex strings.
1321
1322
1323CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.6-1
1324
1325 - Added configure check for getting the correct
1326 strftime() format string; %c is not Y2k safe,
1327 and %KC and NULL are not universally supported.
1328
1329
1330CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.6
1331
1332 - Fixed another possible DoS attack in httpGets()
1333 - Added check for "LANGUAGE = PCL" and "LANGUAGE =
1334 POSTSCRIPT" in mime.types.
1335 - Resolution options were not being passed into the
1336 filter programs properly.
1337 - The default compiler options for GCC no longer include
1338 "-g3", which apparently is deprecated in newer
1339 versions of GCC.
1340 - CheckJobs() could cause cupsd to crash if a job is
1341 cancelled in StartJob().
1342 - The printers.conf and classes.conf files are now
1343 written with restricted permissions.
1344 - The round-robin algorithm used by FindAvailablePrinter()
1345 had problems; fixes contributed by Joel Fredrikson.
1346 - If LoadAllJobs() is unable to determine the file type
1347 of a print job, assume "application/vnd.cups-raw".
1348 - The web interface now provides a job_printer_name
1349 value for any corresponding job_printer_uri value.
1350 - The cups-lpd mini-daemon now logs the client address
1351 and hostname as well as all commands and errors in the
1352 syslog file.
1353 - The IPP backend now detects the supported file formats
1354 and only specifies the document format if it is
1355 supported. This makes IPP printing to network print
1356 servers and cards more reliable without affecting the
1357 capabilities of CUPS servers.
1358 - The time_at_xyz attributes are now converted to human-
1359 readable dates and times for the web interfaces.
1360 - The HP and EPSON sample drivers now correctly catch
1361 signals and eject the current page when a job is
1362 cancelled.
1363 - Fixed bug in CGI code - did not ignore control
1364 characters (e.g. newlines) in form data. This caused
1365 sporatic web interface problems.
1366 - The file type logging code in the scheduler referenced
1367 the optional document-format attribute; the new code
1368 uses the resolved MIME type instead.
1369 - The client.conf parsing code now removes trailing
1370 whitespace.
1371 - The MaxJobs directive was being treated as a boolean
1372 instead of an integer.
1373 - The scheduler would not timeout remote printers if
1374 BrowseInterval was set to 0.
1375 - The lpadmin command now supports setting of options
1376 and user-level access control.
1377 - Added "-E" option to all printing commands to force
1378 encryption.
1379 - The client code did not consume the response to the
1380 OPTIONS request when switching to secure mode.
1381 - The scheduler did not output a Content-Length field
1382 when responding to an OPTIONS request.
1383 - Added documentation on using cups-lpd with xinetd
1384 to the man page.
1385 - The socket backend now starts retries at 5 seconds and
1386 increases the interval to 30 seconds. This should
1387 provide faster printing when multiple jobs/files are
1388 queued for a printer.
1389 - The filters and backends no longer buffer output to
1390 stderr. This should provide much more accurate status
1391 reporting.
1392
1393
1394CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.5-2
1395
1396 - Fixed configure check for OpenSSL to work with RSA
1397 code.
1398 - Added configure check for <sys/ioctl.h>, and use this
1399 check in backend/serial.c.
1400 - Updated configure script handling of data,
1401 configuration, and state directories to use datadir,
1402 sysconfdir, and localstatedir variables.
1403 - NetBSD uses different serial port filenames than
1404 FreeBSD and OpenBSD.
1405 - The pdftops filter didn't need some X-specific files.
1406 - The scheduler makefile doesn't do a chown anymore when
1407 installing (cupsd did this automatically on startup
1408 anyways)
1409
1410
1411CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.5-1
1412
1413 - There was a typo in the top-level Makefile
1414 - The top-level Makefile did not install an init script
1415 for run level 5.
1416 - The configure script did not add the "crypto" library
1417 when checking for the OpenSSL library.
1418 - The OKIDATA PPD files were missing.
1419 - The config.h.in file defined the wrong version number.
1420 - The serial backend did not define "funky_hex" under *BSD.
1421 - Updated the Visual C++ project files and some of the
1422 CUPS API sources to compile under Windows again.
1423
1424
1425CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.5
1426
1427 - Security updates - new default configuration does
1428 not broadcast printer information and only allows
1429 access from the local system.
1430 - EXPERIMENTAL encryption support - CUPS now optionally
1431 supports TLS/SSL encryption via the OpenSSL library.
1432 - Documentation updates.
1433 - Makefile/configure script updates.
1434 - The RPM spec file didn't work out-of-the-box under
1435 RedHat or Mandrake.
1436 - Minor code cleanup to remove extraneous compiler
1437 warnings.
1438 - cupsTempFile() was using %p for the temporary
1439 filename; this should have been %08x (just 8 digit
1440 hex)
1441 - Deleting a printer with active print jobs would still
1442 crash the server.
1443 - ippWrite() and ipp_write_file() didn't send the
1444 correct value length for name-with-language and
1445 text-with-language attributes.
1446 - Updated IPP code to support copied strings (that
1447 should not be freed); this provides slightly more
1448 efficient IPP server performance.
1449 - Updated PDF filter to Xpdf 0.91.
1450 - httpGets() could go into an infinite loop if a line
1451 longer than the input buffer size was sent by a
1452 client. This could be used in a Denial-of-Service
1453 attack.
1454 - The lpstat and CUPS API functions now request only the
1455 data required when getting the list of printer or
1456 class information. This should improve performance
1457 with large numbers of printers on slower machines.
1458 - The scheduler was always enforcing the FilterLimit,
1459 even if FilterLimit was set to 0.
1460 - Updated the Linux USB backend to support Mandrake's
1461 /dev/usb/usblp# filenames.
1462 - The PRINTER and LPDEST environment variables did not
1463 override the lpoptions default printer.
1464 - The PPD read functions incorrectly included trailing
1465 characters (usually whitespace) after quoted string
1466 attributes.
1467 - The multiple-document-handling attribute handling code
1468 did not check for the correct value for collated
1469 copies (separate-documents-uncollated-copies).
1470 - The EPSON driver did not work with OKIDATA printers in
1471 EPSON emulation mode (needed change-emulation command)
1472 - The HP-GL/2 filter did not scale the plot properly in
1473 scale mode 2.
1474 - Added PPD files for 9-pin and 24-pin OKIDATA printers.
1475 - The httpSeparate() function didn't handle passwords
1476 that started with a number.
1477 - ippDelete() could free the character set string
1478 multiple times in name-with-language and
1479 text-with-language attributes.
1480 - The scheduler would access freed memory right after
1481 freeing it (for debug messages); these parts of the
1482 code have been reordered to avoid this situation
1483 which was causing sporatic errors and crashes.
1484 - The ppdClose() function didn't free all of the strings
1485 in the ppd_file_t structure.
1486 - The LoadAllJobs() function in the scheduler did not
1487 close the spool directory.
1488 - Changed all sprintf's that use string formats to
1489 snprintf's, even if the destination buffer is
1490 larger than the source string(s); this protects
1491 against buffer overflows caused outside of CUPS...
1492 - Changed all strcpy's to strncpy's between local and
1493 global variables, even if the destination buffer is
1494 larger than the source string; this protects
1495 against buffer overflows caused outside of CUPS...
1496 - The CUPS certificate functions didn't use the
1497 CUPS_SERVERROOT environment variable when set.
1498 - The directory services code was copying instead of
1499 comparing the remote printer info, resulting in
1500 unnecessary updates of the printer attributes for
1501 remote printers.
1502 - Added new mime.types rules to allow automatic raw
1503 printing of PCL and ESC/P files; PJL headers are
1504 parsed to differentiate between PostScript and
1505 PCL job files. This should eliminate a lot of
1506 the reports of SAMBA printing problems due to
1507 the missing "-oraw" or "-l" options.
1508 - The mimeLoadType() function didn't handle the
1509 3-argument contains() function.
1510 - The LoadPPDs() function in the scheduler didn't
1511 properly set the alloc_ppds variable or handle a PPD
1512 database containing 0 printers.
1513 - The scheduler FindAvailablePrinter() function didn't
1514 use the same queuing logic as the CheckJobs()
1515 function. This caused classes to stall if a remote
1516 printer was always busy.
1517 - Jobs are now assigned to printers in a class
1518 round-robin style. This should prevent the first
1519 server in the class from bearing the brunt of the
1520 jobs.
1521 - The scheduler's LoadAllJobs() function didn't always
1522 restore remote printers for queued jobs on startup.
1523 - The serial backend didn't support the higher baud
1524 rates with the old termios interface. It now supports
1525 57600 and 115200 baud.
1526 - The serial backend now supports different types of
1527 flow control; previously it ignored the flow=XYZ
1528 option in the device URI.
1529 - The serial backend now supports DTR/DSR flow control,
1530 which is popular on dot-matrix printers (access with
1531 "flow=dtrdsr" in the device URI)
1532 - Added new job-originating-host-name attribute for
1533 jobs. The new attribute provides the hostname or
1534 IP address of the machine that submitted the job.
1535 - The set-job-attributes code no longer allows read-only
1536 job attributes to be changed.
1537 - Expanded the click area for the navigation bar in the
1538 web interface.
1539 - Updated the lp and cancel commands to support all of
1540 the Solaris print options (some are simply ignored
1541 since they do not map)
1542 - Updated the scheduler to limit the number of file
1543 descriptors to the maximum select() set size. This
1544 was causing problems on Solaris systems where the
1545 max FD count was increased beyond 1024.
1546 - The scheduler's LoadDevices() function was getting
1547 interrupted by the SIGCHLD signal handler; now ignore
1548 child signals while loading devices.
1549 - Added quota and allow/deny user support for printers
1550 and classes.
1551 - Removed black/CMY adjustment code from the PS and
1552 image file RIPs; it was interfering with some CUPS
1553 driver dithering code.
1554 - The lpc program stopped listing the queue statuses
1555 after the first active printer.
1556 - The cups-lpd program used an output format that the
1557 Solaris printing system did not understand.
1558 - Updated the lpq program to use the Solaris format
1559 except under Tru64 UNIX.
1560 - Some DEC PPD files incorrectly use "Off" for the null
1561 value in UI constraints. Added "Off" to the list of
1562 accepted null values.
1563 - Changed the *BSD define constants to __*BSD__ in all
1564 of the backends.
1565 - Added support for "lpstat printername", which is an
1566 undocumented feature in Solaris.
1567 - The HP-GL/2 filter now only sets the plot size if it
1568 is set in the plot file.
1569 - The lpmove command wasn't sending the requesting
1570 user name, causing it to always fail.
1571 - Updated the cupsTempFile() code to use GetTempPath()
1572 under Windows.
1573 - The cups-lpd mini-daemon didn't limit the number of
1574 data files accepted, didn't use cupsTempFile(),
1575 didn't handle control file job information in any
1576 order, and didn't free job options after printing
1577 a file.
1578 - The scheduler copy_banner() function did not
1579 explicitly set the owner and permissions of the banner
1580 files, which could prevent the banner pages from
1581 printing on some systems.
1582 - The lpstat program wasn't listing remote classes.
1583 - The scheduler did not verify that the printer-uri
1584 attribute was specified in all requests that required
1585 it.
1586
1587
1588CHANGES IN CUPS v1.1.4
1589
1590 - Makefile and configure script fixes.
1591 - **** Changed the default Printcap setting **** to
1592 /etc/printcap. There are just too many people asking
1593 why application XYZ doesn't see their printers!
1594 - The web admin interface now displays an error if it
1595 can't get the list of printer drivers from cupsd.
1596 - The IPP backend was putting the copies option before
1597 the other job options were set. This caused the IPP
1598 request to contain attribute groups in the wrong
1599 order, which prevented remote printing.
1600 - Added checks in scheduler to free memory used for
1601 IPP requests and language information when closing
1602 a client connection.
1603 - Fixed the duplex option in the HP LaserJet driver. It
1604 should now work with all LaserJet printers (and
1605 compatibles)
1606 - The add-printer web interface didn't initialize the
1607 "old info" data pointer, which caused random crashes
1608 on many OS's.
1609 - Fixed many page sizes defined in the Level 1
1610 compatibility file "gs_statd.ps" to match reality.
1611 - Fixed another bug in the setpagedevice "code" in
1612 Ghostscript. It should now accept all standard
1613 Adobe attributes on all platforms.
1614 - Fixed pstoraster so that it reallocates memory for
1615 color depth changes as well as size/resolution
1616 changes. This removes an ordering constraint on
1617 the color, page size, and resolution options in
1618 PPD files.
1619 - The IPP backend didn't use the job's character set
1620 when the destination printer supported it. This
1621 caused problems when printing text files to other
1622 CUPS servers.
1623 - Updated the logic used to determine when to rebuild
1624 the PPD file database. The scheduler now checks the
1625 dates and the number of PPD files (was just checking
1626 the dates.)
1627 - Updated the ippSetCGIVars() function (used by the
1628 web interfaces) to only filter valid string values.
1629 - The PostScript filter was scaling 2-up pages
1630 incorrectly. This caused the edges of some pages to
1631 be clipped.
1632
1633
1634CHANGES IN CUPS v1.1.3
1635
1636 - Makefile fixes.
1637 - RPM spec file changes.
1638 - Documentation updates.
1639 - Enabled pstoraster debug messages for everything
1640 (only logged when LogLevel set to "debug"...)
1641 - Changed the Input/OutputAttributes fix in
1642 pstoraster so that it works on all platforms.
1643 - The HP-GL/2 filter didn't set the right green
1644 color value in encoded polylines or text.
1645 - Updated the "fitplot" code to handle plot sizes
1646 specified as "PSwidth,length" and "PSlength,width".
1647 - Updated the Linux parallel and USB backends to open
1648 the device files prior to looking in /proc for
1649 autoprobe info. This makes sure that loadable device
1650 driver modules are in fact loaded...
1651 - Added new FilterLimit directive to limit the number
1652 of processing jobs/filters on a system.
1653 - set-job-attributes didn't change the job-state to
1654 held/pending when the job-hold-until attribute was
1655 specified.
1656 - set-job-attributes didn't save the new job attributes.
1657 - Now change the "requesting-user-name" attribute in
1658 requests from remote systems to "remroot" when an
1659 unauthenticated "root" user is sent. This can be
1660 changed using the new RemoteRoot directive in
1661 cupsd.conf.
1662 - The cancel-job, hold-job, release-job, and restart-job
1663 operations didn't log the authenticated username.
1664 - The cups-lpd mini-daemon now checks for a
1665 document-format option before forcing raw mode with
1666 filter mode 'l'.
1667 - The cups-lpd mini-daemon now supports "-o" options
1668 on the command-line (passed by inetd) to set global
1669 defaults for all print queues.
1670 - The pstops filter assumed that a file with a Trailer
1671 comment would also have an EOF comment.
1672 - Added new cupsSetPasswordCB(), cupsSetServer(),
1673 cupsSetUser(), and ippSetPort() functions to better
1674 support client applications (especially GUIs...)
1675 - The CUPS-add-class and CUPS-add-printer operations
1676 didn't reset the printer-name attribute on remote
1677 print queues that had to be renamed when a local
1678 printer was defined with the same name.
1679 - The lpoptions command now supports a "-r" option to
1680 remove options for a printer or instance.
1681 - The lpadmin and admin.cgi programs no longer allow
1682 class and printer names to begin with a number; this
1683 caused the command-line utilities to become confused.
1684 - The Linux USB backend now looks for both the parallel
1685 and usblp driver names in the device list.
1686 - Added a new FontPath directive to cupsd.conf, and also
1687 a "--with-fontpath" option for the configure script to
1688 specify alternate font paths for pstoraster.
1689 - The CUPS-move-job operation didn't update the
1690 job-printer-uri attribute.
1691 - The scheduler only looked up printers and classes by
1692 name in IPP requests, instead of using the full URI.
1693 This caused problems with KUPS and friends with
1694 remote printers.
1695 - The scheduler now handles better localization of
1696 hostnames (e.g. server is host.foo.com, remote is
1697 host.subfoo.foo.com, localized is not host.subfoo...)
1698 - The scheduler logging functions now use a common
1699 log file checking/rotation function (courtesy of
1700 Crutcher Dunnavant at Red Hat)
1701 - The scheduler could accept more client connections
1702 than it allocated for if more than one Port or Listen
1703 line was present in cupsd.conf.
1704 - Other minor scheduler performance tweeks.
1705 - The lpq and lprm commands didn't support the default
1706 printer set using lpoptions.
1707 - The lpoptions command now supports a "-l" option to
1708 list the printer-specific options and their current
1709 settings.
1710 - The web printer and class lists now show a link to the
1711 default printer or class at the top of the page.
1712 - The text filter now supports pretty printing of shell
1713 and perl scripts as well as C/C++ source files.
1714 - The top and bottom margins were reversed for landscape
1715 text printing.
1716 - The lpq and lprm commands didn't understand printer
1717 instances.
1718 - The scheduler only selected on the first 100 file
1719 descriptors instead of the maximum file descriptor
1720 limit.
1721 - The scheduler client, listener, and mainline functions
1722 now share code to disable and enable monitoring for
1723 new client connections.
1724 - The imagetoraster filter didn't support all of the
1725 required pagedevice parameters.
1726 - The serial backend now checks for 100 serial ports
1727 under Linux.
1728 - The scheduler used sscanf() to pull out the remote
1729 printer location, description, and make/model strings,
1730 but if any of these options was empty then sscanf()
1731 would stop processing.
1732 - Added "debug2" log level to provide a little less
1733 verbose debugging information at the "debug" level.
1734 - The scheduler would crash if you stopped a printer
1735 that was currently printing a job.
1736 - The scheduler incorrectly allowed jobs in the cancelled,
1737 aborted, or completed state to be cancelled.
1738 - The image filters did not load TIFF images properly
1739 for bottom-to-top and right-to-left orientations.
1740 - Added new cupsEncodeOptions() function to encode
1741 CUPS options as IPP job attributes.
1742 - The IPP backend, LPD mini-daemon, client commands,
1743 and CUPS API did not properly encode multiple
1744 option values separated by commas.
1745 - Added new scheduler malloc logging in debug mode
1746 (provides summary of total arena size, allocated,
1747 and free bytes once a minute)
1748 - The EPM-based distributions didn't install the
1749 correct symlinks for a few man pages.
1750 - Fixed a memory leak in the scheduler - wasn't
1751 freeing old filters when deleting or renaming
1752 printers.
1753 - The scheduler now queries the primary IP address
1754 for the name of the server and maps any incoming
1755 requests from that address to the server name.
1756 This fixes web admin mapping problems from
1757 server.domain.com to localhost.
1758 - The web printer modify interface now remembers
1759 the previous device and driver settings (except
1760 for serial ports.)
1761 - The job-k-octets attribute is now stored as part of
1762 the job attributes; this preserves the information
1763 after a job is completed when job file history is
1764 turned off.
1765 - Dropped option sub-group parsing code for the moment,
1766 since many Xerox PPD files abuse this feature in PPD
1767 files and don't follow the hierarchy rules.
1768 - Added new wrapper code around options so that duplex
1769 options for some HP printers don't prevent prints.
1770 - Added support for Digital UNIX/Tru64 UNIX/OSF/1 format
1771 for "lpstat -v" output.
1772 - Now show the URI for remote printers instead of
1773 /dev/null in "lpstat -v" output.
1774 - Creating classes and adding printers to a class with
1775 the lpadmin command didn't work.
1776 - The banner pages and test page should now format
1777 correctly in both portrait and landscape orientations.
1778 - Updated banner page substitution so that { can appear
1779 by itself without quoting.
1780
1781
1782CHANGES IN CUPS v1.1.2
1783
1784 - Makefile/configure fixes
1785 - RPM spec file and EPM list file fixes
1786 - The cupsTempFile() function now uses a different
1787 algorithm for generating temp files and "reserves"
1788 them to avoid possible security exploitation.
1789 - Now use /dev/random (if available) to seed the random
1790 number generator for certificates.
1791 - The /var/spool/cups and /var/spool/cups/tmp directories
1792 were incorrectly owned by root; they are now owned by
1793 the filter user, typically "lp".
1794 - The scheduler now resets the permissions on the spool
1795 and temp directories as needed to match the filter
1796 user.
1797 - Now expose ppdCollect() as an externally callable
1798 function.
1799 - The image filters now support filtering from the
1800 standard input.
1801 - The imagetoraster filter now collects all printer
1802 options and job patch files and applies them to the
1803 page header as needed.
1804 - Added format and banner options to LPD backend.
1805 - The send-document operation didn't start a job
1806 immediately when last-document was true.
1807 - The set-job-attributes operation didn't correctly
1808 replace the current job-hold-until value.
1809 - Removed the option wrapper code from ppdEmit() and
1810 friends since it caused problems with Ghostscript
1811 and many PS printers.
1812 - Was setting TZ environment variable twice for job
1813 filters.
1814 - Added syslog logging in cups-lpd to aide in
1815 debugging problems.
1816 - The HP-UX parallel port backend did not list the
1817 available parallel ports on some systems (printf
1818 calling problem...)
1819 - The lp and lpr commands overrode user options if
1820 -d/-P were specified after -o.
1821 - The scheduler would crash with a */* filter.
1822 - Added support for a "default" filter for unknown file
1823 types. The example provided in the mime.types and
1824 mime.convs file prints unknown files as if "-oraw" was
1825 specified for the job. This functionality is disabled
1826 by default.
1827 - The "compatibility" mode fix for older backends did not
1828 work for smbspool. Added a workaround for it.
1829 - The HP-GL/2 filter didn't perform the right pen scaling
1830 with some files and the "fitplot" option.
1831 - New Software Performance Specification document that
1832 describes the memory, disk, and CPU usage of all the
1833 CUPS software.
1834
1835
1836CHANGES IN CUPS v1.1.1
1837
1838 - The pstoraster Makefile still referenced one of the
1839 old PDF filter files.
1840 - The filter Makefile used INSTALL_DATA instead of
1841 INSTALL_LIB to install the CUPS image library.
1842 - The administration CGI didn't work properly with
1843 network devices.
1844 - The BrowseACL variable was not updated after the
1845 cupsd.conf file was loaded.
1846 - The lpd mini-daemon didn't support printer instances.
1847 - Now use a default umask of 077 for child processes.
1848 - Now put temp files in /var/spool/cups/tmp for child
1849 processes and the root user, unless TMPDIR or TempDir
1850 is defined otherwise.
1851 - cupsGetPPD() no longer uses easy-to-guess filenames.
1852 - The CUPS-Delete-Class and CUPS-Delete-Printer
1853 operations now save classes.conf file as needed.
1854 - The lppasswd command wouldn't add a user.
1855 - The ppdOpen() function could cause a segfault if a
1856 0-length PPD file was read.
1857 - The image filters were not handling images with
1858 different X and Y resolutions properly.
1859 - The imagetoraster filter defaulted to RGB output
1860 instead of black output like pstoraster.
1861 - The pstops filter didn't handle binary data properly.
1862 - The pstops filter didn't handle copies properly for
1863 PS files lacking DSC comments.
1864 - The pstops filter now appends %%EOF to the end of
1865 documents if they don't have it.
1866 - The cupsGetPPD() function didn't work with remote
1867 printers lacking the @server in the name.
1868 - The configure script didn't work right when only
1869 --prefix was specified.
1870 - The ppdEmit() code now wraps all printer commands so
1871 that buggy PostScript printers will still print a file
1872 after receiving an option that isn't available.
1873 - Fixed the DeskJet margin bug, and disabled 600dpi
1874 color mode until it can be fixed.
1875 - The cupsAddDest() function didn't sort instances
1876 correctly in all cases.
1877 - The time-at-xyz attributes now expand to the date and
1878 time in banner files.
1879
1880
1881CHANGES IN CUPS v1.1
1882
1883 - Documentation updates.
1884 - Configuration script updates.
1885 - Didn't map charset and language value strings to lowercase
1886 and _ to - as required by SLP and IPP.
1887 - ppdLoadXYZ() didn't add the list of available fonts to the
1888 ppd_file_t structure.
1889 - The text filter common code was freeing the PPD file data
1890 before it was used.
1891 - The text filter now embeds missing fonts.
1892 - The CGI interface now maps local access to the server to
1893 the localhost address.
1894 - The HP-GL/2 filter didn't use the specified (or default)
1895 color ranges, resulting in strange colors.
1896 - The HP-GL/2 filter didn't default to no input window, which
1897 caused unnecessary clipping of plots.
1898 - Integrated Xpdf's pdftops filter into CUPS, which is a
1899 lightweight and reliable replacement for Ghostscript's
1900 PDF support.
1901 - Removed all PDF support from Ghostscript.
1902 - Updated HP driver to set top margin; this seems to fix
1903 the offset problem seen on HP DeskJet printers.
1904 - Fixed dependencies on the ZLIB and JPEG libraries in
1905 pstoraster.
1906 - The lpr command wasn't using the lpoptions defined by
1907 the user.
1908 - The lpr command would segfault if the CUPS server was
1909 not running.
1910 - The top-level makefile was not installing the CUPS
1911 initialization script. It now does so if it sees there
1912 is an init.d directory in /sbin, /etc/rc.d, or /etc.
1913 - "lpstat -v all" didn't work.
1914 - pstoraster would crash on some platforms doing the
1915 setpagedevice operator.
1916 - The web administration interface now allows you to set
1917 the default banner pages.
1918 - Images can now be positioned on the page using the new
1919 "position" option.
1920 - The AccessLog, ErrorLog, and PageLog directives now
1921 support "%s" to insert the server name.
1922 - Added a new BrowseShortNames directive to allow for
1923 short remote printer names ("printer" instead of
1924 "printer@server") when possible.
1925 - The scheduler could crash if given an invalid PPD file
1926 with no PageSize attributes.
1927 - Updated the serial, parallel, and usb backends to do
1928 multiple writes and ignore ioctl() errors as needed;
1929 this should fix problems with serial printing on old
1930 serial drivers and with the UltraSPARC parallel port
1931 driver under Solaris 2.7.
1932 - Now propagate LD_LIBRARY_PATH to child processes from
1933 cupsd.
1934 - New DataDir directive for installing in alternate
1935 locations.
1936 - New CUPS_SERVERROOT and CUPS_DATADIR environment
1937 variables to specify installation directories as
1938 needed.
1939 - Queued remote jobs recreate remote printers as needed
1940 when the scheduler is started.
1941 - Deleting a printer also purges all jobs on that
1942 printer.
1943 - Old job and control files that don't belong to a
1944 printer are automatically deleted.
1945 - Wasn't updating time-at-processing and
1946 time-at-completed attributes in job.
1947 - Didn't send required multiple-operation-time-out
1948 attribute in response to a get-printer-attributes
1949 request.
1950 - cups-lpd now supports options set with lpoptions.
1951 - The job-hold-until attribute is now provided with all
1952 jobs. For jobs that are not currently held the value
1953 is "no-hold".
1954 - The scheduler was not sending "unknown" values in IPP
1955 responses.
1956 - The lpoptions command now accumulates options from
1957 previous runs rather than replacing all options for a
1958 printer.
1959 - The IPP backend now switches to IPP/1.0 if a 1.1
1960 request fails.
1961 - The lpadmin and admin.cgi programs now validate new
1962 printer and class names.
1963 - The access_log file now includes the number of IPP bytes
1964 received in a POST request.
1965
1966
1967CHANGES IN CUPS v1.1b5
1968
1969 - Documentation updates.
1970 - The pstoraster filter didn't compile without the JPEG library.
1971 - The cupsd server didn't support the HTTP OPTIONS request
1972 method.
1973 - Dropped the "CLOSE" method supported by the cupsd server.
1974 (not defined in HTTP specification)
1975 - Makefile/configure script fixes.
1976 - Missing the job-restart template.
1977 - Added IPP test suite for testing.
1978 - Missing IPP documentation from binary distributions.
1979 - Fixed multiple-document handling code when last-document
1980 not specified.
1981 - Added more checks to IPP requests to prevent bad requests
1982 from getting through.
1983 - Not all of the Ghostscript error output was being sent to
1984 stderr.
1985 - The PostScript filter now added PJL commands to set the
1986 job name and display string, if supported.
1987 - The scheduler would crash if the browse socket could not
1988 be bound. Now disables browsing if port 631 (reserved for
1989 IPP) is being used by a misbehaving daemon.
1990 - The USB backend now looks for the older Linux 2.2.x USB
1991 printer device filenames as well as the newer ones.
1992 - The IPP backend now uses the UTF-8 charset exclusively,
1993 since apparently only CUPS handles more than US-ASCII and
1994 UTF-8...
1995 - Wasn't quoting ( in PostScript banners...
1996 - Send-document requests with no document-format attribute
1997 could cause cupsd to crash.
1998 - Old jobs in the spool directory might cause cupsd to
1999 crash.
2000 - CUPS now supports all of the recommended job-hold-until
2001 keywords as well as name values of the form "HH:MM" and
2002 "HH:MM:SS".
2003 - Added placeholder pointer for TLS encryption to the HTTP
2004 connection structure.

2006 status pipe wasn't being closed for multi-file jobs.
2007 - Revamped put_params code in pstoraster to fix bitmap
2008 allocation bug with FrameMaker output.
2009 - Ripped out filename, etc. code from pstoraster as it
2010 is a potential security hole.
2011 - Added support for RIP_CACHE environment variable in the
2012 new pstoraster.

2022
2023 - Documentation updates.
2024 - Many makefile and configuration script fixes (should
2025 now compile better under *BSD.)
2026 - The MediaPosition attribute was being mishandled by
2027 GhostScript, causing the RIP to fail whenever a paper
2028 tray was selected.
2029 - The scheduler now logs the final line of log information
2030 from a filter, even if it doesn't end with a newline; this
2031 primarily affects GhostScript error output.
2032 - The scheduler was saving implicit classes, so after a few
2033 restarts you'll end up with AnyPrinter, AnyAnyPrinter, etc.
2034 - The JPEG autodetection didn't work with some JPEG files that
2035 came from digital cameras (JPEG but not JFIF); the new
2036 magic types should work with all images that the JPEG library
2037 can handle.
2038 - Fixed a bug in the new contains() MIME type rule that could
2039 cause cupsd to crash.
2040 - Switched to using strtol() in the MIME type code so that you
2041 can use hex, octal, or decimal constants as desired in the
2042 mime.types file.
2043 - Banner files are now treated as templates, allowing any type
2044 of file to be used as a banner.
2045 - Added a 30-second timeout to backend device reports so that a
2046 hung backend will not prevent the scheduler from starting.
2047 - Backends are once again terminated when jobs are stopped; the
2048 CUPS-supplied backends will stay alive until the downstream
2049 filters have had a chance to clear out old page data.
2050 - The charset lookup in the CUPS localization support was wrong
2051 (iso8859-x instead of iso-8859-x)
2052 - Changed the "cpNNNN" code page files to "windows-NNNN" to match
2053 the IANA registrations.
2054 - New PostScript banner pages.
2055 - Added Windows BMP and Alias PIX image file support to the image
2056 filter.
2057 - The PNG reading coded didn't free all of its buffers.

2059 code.
2060 - Added Solaris options to System V commands.
2061 - Now support the output-bin job template attribute.

2063 keep track of the total number of pages in the
2064 job-media-sheets-completed attribute.
2065 - The penwidth option is now in micrometers to support more
2066 accurate width specification.
2067 - The image filters now support interlaced and transparent PNG
2068 files.
2069 - Didn't handle Keep-Alive for HTTP/1.0 clients.

2073 that support it.
2074 - New lpinfo and lpmove commands.
2075 - The lpq command now supports the Digital UNIX output format.

2079 print multiple files using create-job and send-document
2080 requests (1 job ID for multiple files)
2081 - The lp command now sends multiple files as a single job,
2082 matching the behavior of the System V command.
2083 - The "cancel -a" command now purges job history files.
2084
2085
2086CHANGES IN CUPS v1.1b3
2087

2090 which caused problems with some versions of Bourne
2091 shell and Bash.

2108 immediately. (when sending jobs to a class, the remote
2109 printer is only used when it becomes available)
2110 - The scheduler now supports printing of banner pages
2111 via the job-sheets attribute (banner files go in
2112 /usr/share/cups/banners)
2113 - The cupsd process now forks itself into the background
2114 (override with -f)
2115 - Added several *BSD enhancements.
2116 - Added UNSUPPORTED libtool option to configuration
2117 script to allow the use of libtool. Note that this is
2118 UNSUPPORTED by us, but added by request of the *BSD
2119 folks.
2120 - The parallel, serial, and usb backends now retry the
2121 opening of their ports. This allows multiple print
2122 queues to be associated with a single physical port,
2123 and will allow CUPS to support several types of
2124 parallel port auto-switches in the near future.
2125 - Set-Job-Attributes now supports adding, changing, and
2126 deleting job template attributes, and no longer allows
2127 job-printer-uri to be set (see CUPS-Move-Job)

2135 printers, or classes (believe it or not, this is
2136 needed for some sites)
2137 - The web interfaces now support language-specific
2138 templates.
2139 - The web admin interface now supports class management.

2142 specific printer.
2143 - The web admin interface now supports configuration of
2144 the default printer options in the PPD file.

2146 authentication for the test page instead of admin
2147 authentication.
2148 - Updated the RPM spec file for the current release.
2149 - Updated language support for Windows code pages.
2150 - 8-bit character set files can now use multiple fonts
2151 (needed for Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, etc.)

2166
2167
2168CHANGES IN CUPS v1.1b2
2169
2170 - Documentation updates.

2173 printer.
2174 - Many configure script and makefile fixes.
2175 - The Microsoft code page files were missing from the
2176 distribution.
2177 - Added a workaround for the HP IPP client (which is sending
