25.SH DESCRIPTION
bd7854cb 26\fIcups-lpd\fR is the CUPS Line Printer Daemon ("LPD")
27mini-server that supports legacy client systems that use the LPD
28protocol. \fIcups-lpd\fR does not act as a standalone network
29daemon but instead operates using the Internet "super-server"
30\fIinetd(8)\fR or \fIxinetd(8)\fR. If you are using \fIinetd\fR,
31add the following line to the \fIinetd.conf\fR file to enable the
32\fIcups-lpd\fR mini-server:
ef416fc2 33.br
34.nf
35
bd7854cb 36 printer stream tcp nowait lp @CUPS_SERVERBIN@/daemon/cups-lpd cups-lpd \\
ef416fc2 37 -o document-format=application/octet-stream

41\fBNote:\fR If you are using Solaris 10 or higher, you must run
42the \fIinetdconv(1m)\fR program to register the changes to the
43inetd.conf file.
44.LP
bd7854cb 45If you are using the newer \fIxinetd(8)\fR daemon, create a file
46named \fI/etc/xinetd.d/cups\fR containing the following lines:
ef416fc2 47.br
48.nf
49
50 service printer
51 {
52 socket_type = stream
53 protocol = tcp
54 wait = no
55 user = lp
56 group = sys

60 }

65.br
66Sets the CUPS server (and port) to use.
67.TP 5
89d46774 68-n
69.br
70Disables reverse address lookups; normally \fIcups-lpd\fR will
71try to discover the hostname of the client via a reverse DNS
72lookup.
73.TP 5
bd7854cb 74-o name=value
75.br
76Inserts options for all print queues. Most often this is used to
77disable the "l" filter so that remote print jobs are filtered as
78needed for printing; the examples in the previous section set the
79"document-format" option to "application/octet-stream" which
80forces autodetection of the print file format.
ef416fc2 81.SH PERFORMANCE
bd7854cb 82\fIcups-lpd\fR performs well with small numbers of clients and
ef416fc2 83printers. However, since a new process is created for each
84connection and since each process must query the printing system
85before each job submission, it does not scale to larger
86configurations. We highly recommend that large configurations
87use the native IPP support provided by CUPS instead.
88.SH SECURITY
bd7854cb 89\fIcups-lpd\fR currently does not perform any access control
ef416fc2 90based on the settings in \fIcupsd.conf(5)\fR or in the
bd7854cb 91\fIhosts.allow(5)\fR or \fIhosts.deny(5)\fR files used by TCP
92wrappers. Therefore, running \fIcups-lpd\fR on your server will
ef416fc2 93allow any computer on your network (and perhaps the entire
94Internet) to print to your server.
95.LP
96While \fIxinetd\fR has built-in access control support, you
97should use the TCP wrappers package with \fIinetd\fR to limit
98access to only those computers that should be able to print
99through your server.
100.LP
bd7854cb 101\fIcups-lpd\fR is not enabled by the standard CUPS distribution.
ef416fc2 102Please consult with your operating system vendor to determine
bd7854cb 103whether it is enabled on your system.
ef416fc2 104.SH COMPATIBILITY
bd7854cb 105\fIcups-lpd\fR does not enforce the restricted source port
ef416fc2 106number specified in RFC 1179, as using restricted ports does not
107prevent users from submitting print jobs. While this behavior is
108different than standard Berkeley LPD implementations, it should
109not affect normal client operations.
110.LP
111The output of the status requests follows RFC 2569, Mapping
112between LPD and IPP Protocols. Since many LPD implementations
113stray from this definition, remote status reporting to LPD
114clients may be unreliable.
