2---------------
3
6e3d4276 4CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.19
5
cb114623 6 - The time-at-xyz attributes were not recognized in
7 banner files if prefixed by a question mark, e.g.
8 "{?time-at-creation}".
a684a3b0 9 - Added support for pre-filtering application/pictwps
10 files on MacOS clients before sending them to a server
11 via IPP.
edd85093 12 - The scheduler now allows file:/dev/null device URIs
13 even if FileDevices is set to No.
7e3ba0af 14 - CUPS uses strerror() for hostname resolution errors,
15 when it should have used hstrerror().
273e40d6 16 - The USB backend no longer tries to guess the serial
17 number of a device from the USB devices file; this
18 means that printers that don't report their serial
19 numbers in the device ID string will not be
20 individually selectable.
d0598693 21 - The pstops filter didn't handle page ranges properly
22 when a page contained an embedded document.
cb114623 23 - Added a translation of the web interface to German.
96eae06b 24 - When printing using the OutputOrder=Reverse option
25 with duplexing, the output order is now truly
26 reversed; the order of sub-pages when printing N-up is
27 the same.
28 - The pstops filter did not always output the extra
29 blank page when printing a document with an odd number
30 of pages with duplexing enabled.
2d850885 31 - The ippAddXYZ functions no longer allow the
32 application to add less than 1 value.
5b28477f 33 - Fixed a URL rewrite bug in the web interface - local
34 access was sometimes redirected away from localhost...
256f3670 35 - The ppdOpen() functions could get in an infinite loop
36 if the PPD file contained a keyword or text that was
37 too large for the buffer.
bcf61448 38 - Added preliminary support for GNU TLS; patch provided
39 by Jeff Licquia.
aea6601a 40 - Now timeout IPP attribute reads after 1 second inside
41 an attribute definition.
de218675 42 - Now timeout connections that have been shutdown (due
43 to errors) after 30 seconds instead of the Timeout
44 setting (300 seconds by default). This provides
45 faster recovery from DoS attacks.
f0ad8cdc 46 - A denial-of-service attack warning message was being
47 written to the log files by the scheduler for every
48 detection. This caused a DoS of its own in some
49 situations. The warning message is now written no more
50 than once per minute.
67fa1315 51 - Fixed the CIE colorspace support code in the image and
52 PS RIPs.
320115a7 53 - The job-quota-period, job-page-limit, and job-k-limit
54 attributes were not flagged as integers, so setting
55 quotas would not work.
6e3d4276 56 - Added an additional response check in the scheduler to
57 more quickly recover from denial-of-service attacks.
58 - The cupstestppd file was incorrectly installed in the
59 /usr/sbin directory instead of /usr/bin.
60 - The EPM list file did not include the cupstestppd
61 program or man page files.
62
63
759f5023 64CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.18
65
e38a7cef 66 - Fixed a bug in the Set-Job-Attributes code in the
67 scheduler that would cause it to crash or continuously
68 write a job control file.
f63a430f 69 - SECURITY FIX: The scheduler now provides a FileDevice
70 directive to control whether new printers can be added
71 using device URIs of the form "file:/filename". The
72 default is to not allow printers with these device
73 URIs.
767ae392 74 - The scheduler did not compute the cost of filters
75 properly, nor did it choose a multi-filter solution
76 with a lower cost than a single filter solution.
00528abb 77 - Now install CUPS PPD file test utility (cupstestppd)
78 to support basic conformance testing of PPD files.
79 - The scheduler now logs an error message when it sees a
80 non-conforming PPD file.
ae65da6c 81 - Upgraded pdftops filter to Xpdf 2.01 with fixes for
82 TrueType fonts.
1060c9b6 83 - Added a MaxClientsPerHost configuration directive to
84 provide limited protection against Denial of Service
85 attacks.
901b295d 86 - SECURITY FIX: Potential underflow/overflow bug in web
87 interface.
88 - SECURITY FIX: Race condition in certificate creation.
89 - SECURITY FIX: Bad URIs in browse packets could be used
90 to exploint the web interface underflow/overflow bug.
901b295d 91 - SECURITY FIX: Some types of Denial of Service attacks
92 were not handled properly, so once the attack was over
93 the scheduler did not close the connections
94 immediately on all platforms.
099f4d77 95 - SECURITY FIXES: Added integer overflow/underflow
96 checks for all image formats.
9c1ee2b9 97 - The pstops filter didn't reset the showpage operator
98 back to its original at the end of a job; this
99 prevented the concatenation of documents (used
100 primarily for CUPS 1.2...)
0e66dba3 101 - The cupsGetPPD() function didn't always set the
102 cupsLastError() value when an error occurred.
daeeb91c 103 - The IPP media, output-bin, and sides attributes took
104 precedence over the corresponding PPD options, which
105 caused inconsistent behavior under MacOS X with some
106 PPD files.
dcc2e394 107 - The cupsaddsmb utility specified the wrong number of
108 arguments to the adddriver command when adding the
109 Win9x PostScript drivers.
dd44d54e 110 - The web interface did not always report the correct
111 error message.
759f5023 112 - The scheduler did not clear the POSIX signal action
113 structure when waiting for the child to send it a
114 SIGUSR1 signal; this could cause the signal handler
115 not to be called properly, preventing the parent
116 process from returning.
117
118
3cc7bca4 119CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.17
120
5c826e17 121 - The "manual_copies" option did not work when the LPD
122 backend had to retry a print job.
3c892427 123 - The image filters did not convert GIF images properly.
2d21c1ef 124 - The RunAsUser option was incompatible with the new
125 daemon-mode code in 1.1.16.
2d5e06dd 126 - Fixed a problem with the Set-Job-Attributes and
127 PostScript job ticket code in the scheduler - the
128 "last" attribute pointer was never updated, which
129 could cause the scheduler to crash when applying job
130 ticket data.
131 - Fixed a problem in the scheduler that caused it to
132 continue processing HTTP requests on a connection
133 after it was shutdown.
3d6f3b2b 134 - The scheduler now allows accounts authenticated via
135 PAM to not have a corresponding UNIX account, but
136 group membership still requires the account name to be
137 listed in the UNIX group file(s)...
673d1710 138 - The scheduler used a fixed-size (16k) buffer for
139 encoding job options for filters; it now dynamically
140 allocates and expands the buffer as needed depending
141 on the options that are sent in a job.
8ee2dc56 142 - The pdftops filter didn't support all of the MacOS
143 characters for MacRoman encoded fonts.
a7cc258b 144 - The cupsEncodeOptions() and cupsParseOptions()
145 functions now conform to the grammer defined by the
146 current draft of the PAPI specification. The main
147 difference is that option=yes and option=no are no
148 longer treated as boolean options.
7914a6a1 149 - The IPP backend didn't honor the encryption settings
150 in /etc/cups/client.conf.
dfac1292 151 - Fixed a potential bug in the HTTP code which was
152 caused by servers sending the status line and
153 newline(s) in separate packets.
13f5eff6 154 - User-defined classification strings are now printed
155 verbatim - previously the classification box would be
156 empty.
78143282 157 - Re-added Spanish to the list of PPD languages that
158 CUPS supports.
e0578e6e 159 - CUPS API library user and temp file updates for
160 Windows.
f33d1239 161 - The image filters did not properly handle grayscale
162 printing of Sun Raster images.
bf9e2a45 163 - The scheduler never reset the NumJobs variable before
164 loading the job list (previously this only happened on
165 a full start, so the problem was never apparent...)
bdbaa675 166 - The HTTP and IPP read/write code didn't handle EINTR
167 (interrupted system call) errors.
168 - When under high load, the scheduler could abort due to
169 the wrong errno value after a select() call. This was
170 caused by the child signal handler.
171 - Added new load tests to the test target to verify that
172 cupsd can handle hundreds of simultaneous jobs without
173 error.
e1e31a38 174 - The Solaris USB backend now supports the new device
175 URI syntax.
7a1c86c5 176 - The ppdOpen*() functions now reset the numeric locale
177 settings while loading a PPD file.
b2fdde8d 178 - Fixed the libtool build rules.
179 - The manpage make rules didn't use $(MAKE) and
180 $(MFLAGS) for the language subdirectories.
d0e4469d 181 - Now set the LC_TIME locale category to get the
182 properly localized time string.
549d1888 183 - Fixed a problem in the scheduler that would cause the
184 web interface problems when adding, modifying, or
185 configuring a printer or class.
98904cd6 186 - The backends now ignore SIGPIPE so that failed job
187 filters will not stop a print queue.
d47f8ebe 188 - The lpstat command did not allow for destination lists
189 ("lpstat -v printer1,printer2")
190 - Fixed parsing of long filter status messages in the
191 scheduler.
192 - Added some startup performance enhancements to the
193 scheduler so that the printer object information is
194 regenerated fewer times and the MIME type database is
195 not filled with lots of empty filters for raw/direct
196 queues.
854d3bb2 197 - The LPD backend now sends the job title as the print
198 filename.
137d4d44 199 - Added support for variable sizes in the EPSON dot
200 matrix printer drivers. This allows for pages as
201 short as 1/2" (1 row of labels) and does not do an
202 automatic form feed.
203 - French translation updates.
e639fb32 204 - The filters did not quote the page label string when
205 embedding it in PostScript output.
3cc7bca4 206 - The serial backend now enumerates serial ports under
207 MacOS X.
208 - The pdftops filter contained font rasterizer code that
209 wasn't being used and that depended on X11. This code
210 has been removed.
211
212
06415a96 213CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.16
214
727e6d14 215 - The cancel and lprm commands now both display an error
216 message and return a non-zero exit status if an
217 attempt is made to cancel a job on a non-existent
218 printer.
219 - The lpoptions command incorrectly complained if a
220 request to delete a non-existent printer was made.
807a1ef5 221 - If the client.conf file defines an alternate server
222 name, the "configure printer" action in the web
223 interface might not work.
7cc9aebd 224 - The lpstat command now supports a "-W" option so that
225 you can display completed jobs as well as
226 not-completed (pending) jobs.
a1ca1702 227 - The lp and lpr commands did not return an error when
228 one or more files in a set of files for printing could
229 not be printed.
3b8ff70f 230 - The lp, lpadmin, and lpstat commands now consistently
231 return with a non-zero exit status when an error
232 occurs.
db628f45 233 - The scheduler would not accept print jobs sent to a
234 stopped remote printer.
da1bfd3d 235 - The texttops filter incorrectly converted the page
236 numbers in the prettyprint header to double-byte
237 characters when printing a non-Unicode text file. This
238 caused an extra space to appear between each digit in
239 the page number.
da312e94 240 - The scheduler did not use a case-insensitive
241 comparison when adding filters for a printer.
be8c3862 242 - Upgraded the pdftops filter to Xpdf 1.01.
801766ac 243 - The scheduler no longer passes the page-border and
244 number-up-layout attributes to filters when printing
245 banner pages.
25037b2b 246 - The LPD backend now uses a 30-second timeout when
247 sending commands and control files, and a 30-second
248 timeout when retrieving responses from an LPD server.
1aef57ed 249 If a timeout occurs, it retries indefinitely. This
25037b2b 250 helps to make LPD printing over VPNs work more
251 reliably.
a9219725 252 - The USB backend now supports device URIs based on the
253 printer serial number and/or model number under Linux.
254 This avoids the "wrong device filename" problem when
255 using more than one USB printer.
c3c5af5e 256 - Now just shutdown the receiving end of a client
257 connection when sending an error that requires the
258 server to disconnect from the client afterwards. This
259 fixes a problem when doing remote administration with
260 encryption enabled.
b05809b0 261 - The scheduler did not send a printer-state-message
262 attribute if the string was empty; it now always sends
263 this attribute. This caused the printer message to be
264 displayed for other printers in the web interface.
04e01993 265 - The LPD backend now supports a "manual_copies" option,
266 e.g.: "lpd://server/queue?manual_copies=no", in order
267 to handle copies for raw jobs to printers that don't
268 implement the LPD protocol properly...
a05e4307 269 - The "mirror" option was not being handled by the
270 PostScript or image filters.
f7696015 271 - Updated the cupsaddsmb command to support the new CUPS
272 driver for Windows NT/2k/XP.
de659667 273 - Filter status lines longer than 1023 characters could
274 cause the scheduler to get into an infinite loop.
aa25b9e1 275 - The scheduler didn't reset the job state to pending
276 when modifying an active printer.
6ed689f8 277 - Now limit the maximum number of recursion steps when
278 searching for a filter for a job, in case a user
279 defines a circular filter rule.
280 - The PostScript filter would embed an invalid
281 requirements comment in some cases.
56e9c951 282 - Added support for embedded job tickets in PostScript
283 files.
5ca43bfd 284 - The PostScript filter now detects EPS files and should
285 better handle printing EPS files.
5ae53c1e 286 - The cancel command now ignores a trailing destination
287 name when cancelling a specific job ID (Solaris
288 compatibility).
879062a9 289 - The scheduler now rejects jobs with copies outside the
da956953 290 range of 1 to MaxCopies, inclusive.
291 - Added new MaxCopies directive to set the maximum
292 number of copies that a user can request.
879062a9 293 - The scheduler didn't block signals while it processed
294 others and when it forked processes.
5ae53c1e 295 - The scheduler checked for new jobs to print when
296 stopping a job. This caused jobs to restart before a
297 shutdown.
098f80c5 298 - Updated the CUPS startup script to better support
299 different timezones and to support the RedHat/Mandrake
300 init script functions, if available.
e426d516 301 - The scheduler did not properly handle backslashes in
302 banner files; it incorrectly assumed that "\c" should
303 always be replaced by "c", instead of only looking for
304 "\{" and replacing it by "{".
90ca6406 305 - The texttops filter didn't handle prettyprint=no.
306 - The text and HP-GL/2 filters didn't check for other
307 common duplex option names like cupsMarkOptions() did.
c56db294 308 - "lpoptions -x printer" no longer clears the "default
309 printer" status of the printer.
3f1897d4 310 - cupsTempFd() now stops trying to create a temporary
311 file after 1000 tries, and aborts on any error other
312 than EEXIST. This should prevent lp/lpr hangs due to
313 a bad or missing temporary directory.
5a3ef28d 314 - The lpadmin command did not send the right URI to the
315 scheduler when setting options on classes. This
316 caused a client-error-bad-request error.
e354b6e3 317 - The CUPS API convenience functions would attempt to
318 connect to the remote server name in a
319 "printer@server" printer name instead of dealing with
320 the default (usually local) server. Aside from
321 causing user confusion, the remote server name might
322 not be resolved properly, causing further problems.
f2320e2d 323 - "lp -q" would cause the "lp" command to segfault, as
324 the program would try to print the option letter that
325 caused the error using the wrong index into the
326 command-line; bugfix from Debian.
f2ffec40 327 - Fixed a minor inconsistancy in the encoding of boolean
328 attributes from printer options in
329 cupsEncodeOptions().
42ede8a2 330 - Added a FilterNice directive which sets the priority
331 of job filter processes that are run by the scheduler.
93704f20 332 - Added Solaris x86 USB printer support.
34f927d3 333 - The USB backend now reports both the ulpt and unlpt
334 devices under *BSD.
78ab59ae 335 - The "lpstat -o" command would truncate the
336 "printer-jobid" string if it was longer than 21
337 characters.
338 - The PJL-based MIME type rules now look in the first
339 1024 bytes instead of just the first 512 bytes to find
340 the language mode.
341 - The image file types are now listed explicitly in the
342 mime.convs file so that additional image file formats
343 do not use the standard CUPS image filters by default.
344 - Updated the Software Programmers Manual to include
345 all of the CUPS API functions.
cefea041 346 - ppdOpen*() no longer sorts choices for an option.
ce691c0f 347 - The web interface now enforces constraints in PPD
348 files when configuring a printer.
3733593d 349 - When stopping a printer, the scheduler didn't set the
350 printer state before stopping the current job.
a56289b6 351 - The cupsaddsmb utility now lists all data files for
352 Win9x and WinMe clients when installing that Windows
353 driver.
997cf8b0 354 - Jobs submitted to a class now bounce immediately to
355 the next available printer rather than waiting until
356 that printer is available.
357 - Filters and backends now also get the CLASS
358 environment variable set when a job is printed to a
359 printer class instead of a normal printer.
360 - Added French translations of the web interface, CUPS
361 Overview, Software Administrators Manual, and Software
362 Users Manual contributed by Marian REYT-LLABRES.
6b7de82f 363 - Added several "hint" messages for common configuration
364 problems that are stored in the error_log file.
365 - httpSeparate() now unquotes %xx characters in the
366 username:password field of a URI.
5fe35f41 367 - When starting the scheduler in daemon mode, the parent
368 process now waits for the child to signal it is ready
369 to accept connections.
370 - Added -F option to cupsd to run cupsd in the
371 foreground but detach from the controlling terminal
372 and current directory.
373 - The scheduler did not reload jobs when receiving a HUP
374 signal; this would cause problems since the pointers
375 into the file type database would no longer be valid
376 for existing jobs.
377 - The scheduler did not save the network interface list
378 update time, thus no caching of the network data was
379 actually provided.
380 - Updated the SuSE PAM configuration file.
9ba7fc54 381 - The LPD backend now supports a "reserve" option and no
382 longer reserves a priviledged port by default.
bdfe4c00 383 - The cupsaddsmb command now continues past printers
384 that do not have a PPD file to export.
19f699df 385 - The lpstat command didn't treat printer names as
386 case-insensitive.
387 - The lpstat command now reports the printer location
388 attribute with "lpstat -l -p".
c5488f2f 389 - Fixed a bug in the vsnprintf() emulation function,
390 which was used on old versions of HP-UX, IRIX, and
391 Solaris.
b91c8a76 392 - The number-up option was incorrectly being used when
393 printing banner pages.
4f759211 394 - Added support for Greek and Slovak PPD files.
aa37e40e 395 - CUPS now supports printer names containing any
396 printable character, e.g. "123-abc", "foo-bar", etc.
d958c5cf 397 - The null filter was not supported in mime.convs due to
398 a bug in the filter validation code.
3a74d6bf 399 - Changes in the default printer and printer attributes
400 were not always reflected in the generated printcap
401 file.
8ce19460 402 - Implicit classes did not inherit the location or
403 description from member printers.
fabb006b 404 - The httpGetHostByName() function did not handle
405 hostnames that started with a number.
1f1822fd 406 - Updated the filters to use the %cupsRotation comment
904eef76 407 instead of %%Orientation to auto-rotate pages, since
408 the use of %%Orientation is inconsistent.
d9e72533 409 - Added the RootCertDuration directive to control how
410 often the root authentication certificate is updated.
375a0ad5 411 - Increased the size of the IPP write buffer to 32k to
412 allow for larger attribute values and to provide more
413 efficient output of large numbers of attributes.
7ed5d5f2 414 - The polling daemon now retries the initial connection
415 to the remote server; this fixes a problem when the
416 remote server is unavailable when the scheduler starts
417 up...
19e7b382 418 - The scheduler didn't validate Digest users against the
419 system group(s), so Digest and BasicDigest
420 authentication didn't work for administration
421 operations.
103abc03 422 - The scheduler now passes the SHLIB_PATH environment
423 variable to child processes (HP-UX shared libraries)
06415a96 424 - The scheduler now maps accesses from the loopback
425 interface to "localhost".
426 - The cups-lpd mini-daemon sent a status code byte in
427 response to queue state commands, but those commands
428 only return textual data.
429
430
7680b71d 431CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.15-1
432
433 - The lpc and lprm sources didn't include the CUPS
434 string function header, which is required on systems
435 that don't have their own snprintf() function.
436 - The French manpage Makefile tried to install the
437 language subdirectories when it (obviously) didn't
438 have to.
439
440
74cfdb8b 441CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.15
442
dab1a4d8 443 - Updated the CUPS license agreement for the new MacOS
444 license exception.
611e4623 445 - The printer-info attribute now defaults to the printer
446 name if no value has been set.
52900e4c 447 - ppdOpen() and friends now add an "Auto" InputSlot
448 option if none is provided to automatically select the
449 correct tray.
ed6078a4 450 - Updated the ppdEmit() and ppdEmitFd() functions to
451 (re)mark the correct PageSize or PageRegion option
452 depending on the selected ManualFeed or InputSlot
453 options.
454 - ppdEmitFd() didn't handle custom page sizes.
455 - Darwin uses <pam/pam_appl.h> instead of
456 <security/pam_appl.h>.
fba7409c 457 - The jobs.cgi web interface now handles all job
458 operations, allowing the administrator to allow "job
459 administrators" or operators to manage jobs (but not
460 queues) on the server.
461 - The cupsDoFileRequest() function now checks if the
462 filename passed into the function is a directory, and
463 returns the IPP_NOT_POSSIBLE error if so.
464 - New SCSI printer backend.
a594463b 465 - Cleaned up handling of locales with trailing character
466 set definitions.
a319615f 467 - Fixed handling of invalid PPD attributes inside
468 OpenUI/CloseUI.
b92c5a4f 469 - Fixed a problem with SSL and the job, printer, and
470 admin CGIs on ports other than 443.
b47f3ce5 471 - The scheduler didn't handle AuthClass properly.
e6fc9c68 472 - Added French translation of man pages.
a8ee4682 473 - Updated the text filter to support the const_cast,
474 dynamic_cast, and static_cast keywords in ISO C++.
def978d5 475 - Now use strlcat() and strlcpy() (or emulation
476 functions) for easier string/buffer protection.
7b40ae49 477 - The auto-generated printcap/printers.conf files now
478 have a small comment header explaining where the file
479 comes from...
6df23e27 480 - The PostScript filter now supports 6, 9, and 16-up
ed6078a4 481 output, as well as new page-border and
6df23e27 482 number-up-layout options.
415199da 483 - The lpoptions command didn't set options properly when
484 using the default printer.
485 - Added ConfigFilePerm and LogFilePerm directives.
486 - Increased maximum size of MIME types to IPP_MAX_NAME
487 to allow for longer printer names.
488 - No longer create remote printers when loading job
489 history data.
490 - The printer-make-and-model attribute wasn't set when
491 the PPD file didn't contain a NickName attribute.
492 - Now handle PPD files with translation strings longer
493 than 80 bytes - they are truncated if they go over...
c47e97cc 494 - The scheduler didn't handle signals until after it
495 loaded the configuration files the first time; this
496 caused problems on some installations that would
497 restart the scheduler as the system booted into run
498 level 3.
499 - Now throttle broadcasts like we do for polling.
0203af93 500 - Fixed a bug in the reading of PPD files using CR's
501 instead of CR LF's or LF's.
151718ce 502 - The scheduler would crash if cupsd.conf contained a
503 BrowseProtocols line with no protocols listed.
b05e8e24 504 - The HTML job operation templates now link back to the
505 destination printer or class.
69d74c4b 506 - The serial backend now detects USB serial devices.
238bae16 507 - The LPD mini-daemon (cups-lpd) now passes the
508 job-originating-host-name attribute to the scheduler
509 (cupsd).
a4e23897 510 - Updated the IPP backend to reconnect after downgrading
511 from IPP/1.1 to 1.0, and when sending requests to HP
512 JetDirect interfaces that don't support HTTP
513 Keep-Alive like they should.
1cf29e95 514 - Now pass NLSPATH and DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH environment
515 variables, if defined, to CGI and job processes.
516 - Removed the pstoraster filter (based on GNU
517 Ghostscript 5.50) and now provide the raster "driver"
518 and patch file necessary to use the current GNU
519 Ghostscript 7.05 release.
520 - Removed unnecessary fonts and updated the Courier and
521 Symbol fonts to the latest versions to better support
522 non-ISOLatin1 text.
523 - The text filter now always embeds the Courier and
524 Symbol fonts to ensure that they contain the full set
525 of glyphs.
576b82ca 526 - The lp and lpr commands now only override the SIGINT
527 handler if it is not being ignored (patch from Robert
528 Ambrose for some interactive software that catches
529 SIGINT and will gracefully cancel the print...)
350807be 530 - The PostScript image filter (imagetops) now supports
531 printing CMYK images using the CMYK colorspace.
532 - The image filters now support CMYK JPEG files, and
533 correctly handles the inverted files from Photoshop
534 (which seems to save RGBW data, not CMYK...)
e3bf38b3 535 - Added a "check" target to the top-level makefile to
536 conform with GNU standards (same as "test").
746265a5 537 - The IPP code didn't always map the POSIX locale "C" to
538 the proper IPP language code.
32f78676 539 - The cupsaddsmb program was updated to use the
540 setdriver command instead of addprinter.
934ef66d 541 - Banner pages were not handled properly for implicit
542 classes.
7200e26c 543 - When tunneling to a remote system using SSH, the
544 printer URIs for local printers on the remote system
545 did not reflect the correct port number.
d7a9de63 546 - The Allow, Deny, BrowseAllow, BrowseDeny, and
547 BrowseAddress directives now support the network
548 interface names "@LOCAL" and "@IF(name)" for access
549 control and browsing based on the current interface
550 addresses instead of fixed names or IP addresses.
2a55786c 551 - The texttops filter did not properly recognize the
552 "nowrap" (wrap=false) option.
83575f2d 553 - The InstallableOptions group name in a PPD file is now
554 translated separately (CUPS_MSG_OPTIONS_INSTALLED) so
555 that UIs can accurately detect the presence of this
556 group.
f4647930 557 - The scheduler no longer keeps job history data for
558 remote printers on the client (just on the server.)
4c2096b8 559 - The parallel and USB backends now retry if the backend
560 detects that the printer is not connected to the
561 system (rather than stopping the queue...)
562 - The network backends now retry if the backend detects
563 that the printer is not connected to the network or is
564 unreachable (rather than stopping the queue...)
c672a858 565 - The cupsGetDests() function no longer lists options
566 and instances for printers that no longer exist.
31e65f97 567 - The scheduler now converts the document language to
568 the correct LANG string.
8c47c4b4 569 - The cupsaddsmb program now supports alternative CUPS
570 and SAMBA server names.
40a0e1d1 571 - The PostScript filter now supports the Orientation
572 comment and rotates the page as needed automatically.
f915b00f 573 - Revamped the makefiles slightly to use automatically
574 generated dependencies.
575 - Build fixes for OS X.
a1028786 576 - The TIFF reading code depended on the newest version
577 of libtiff; now conditionally compile that portion of
578 the loader.
bbc1bfe5 579 - The PPD code now decodes all JCL options in the
580 JCLSetup group, not just those options that start with
581 the prefix "JCL".
267cf96a 582 - The backends now read print data using the read()
583 system call to ensure that the current page is printed
584 while the next page is being processed.
2f7be6ff 585 - The pdftops filter did not support shading type 3
586 (radial fill) for the "sh" operator.
dab1a4d8 587 - The cups-polld program now throttles the local
588 broadcasts of polled printers and classes so that the
589 local system is not overwhelmed with hundreds of
590 printers and classes all at once.
591 - Updated the serial backend to support 230,400 baud for
592 the Linux PPC port.
59168282 593 - The cupsGetJobs() function wouldn't report completed
594 jobs that did not have a document-format attribute
595 value.
1c9c423b 596 - The cupsEncodeOptions() function now maintains a table
597 of known boolean and numeric options, and encodes all
598 other options as strings.
f918a565 599 - Now add a newline before the end-of-page code in the
600 PostScript filter; this fixes a problem with files
601 that don't end with a newline.
a28d12c5 602 - The image filters looked for the "orientation" option
603 instead of the correctly named "orientation-requested"
604 option.
74cfdb8b 605 - The cupsEncodeOptions() function now handles mixed
606 integers and ranges.
607 - New translation guide for developers to provide native
608 language support for CUPS.
609
610
ee8b7dd3 611CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.14
612
843779ef 613 - The ippRead() function did not verify that the
ba31b514 614 attribute name length or string with language value
615 was not larger than the read buffer.
e2943c5f 616 - The scheduler set the signal handlers before loading
617 the configuration files the first time; this prevented
618 the RunAsUser directive from blocking server reloads.
5fd84fcc 619 - Added Swedish message catalog.
0e1f4bec 620 - The parallel backend now recognizes the /dev/printers
621 device directory under Linux 2.4.x.
ba31b514 622 - MacOS X fixes.
623 - The cupsaddsmb utility sent the server name after the
624 user information when executing the rpcclient program.
625 This caused problems with some versions of SAMBA
626 2.2.x.
ee8b7dd3 627 - The IPP backend did not pass the requesting user name
628 when checking on the print job status. This prevented
629 it from waiting for the job to complete when
630 communicating with some IPP implementations that
631 require it.
632
633
d2503e02 634CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.13
635
28a96fe2 636 - The lpstat command did not report jobs submitted to
637 regular printer classes.
0f74081c 638 - The texttops filter didn't use sufficient precision
639 when positioning text with some values of cpi and lpi.
640 This could cause the alignment of text to stray.
0ffae44c 641 - cupsGetDests() didn't merge the options from the
642 /etc/cups/lpoptions file with ~/.lpoptions - options
643 in ~/.lpoptions overrode them completely.
644 - Added support for KOI8-R and KOI8-U character sets,
645 and added several Russian message catalogs.
bd726d0d 646 - The scheduler put the wrong timezone offset in the log
647 files (e.g. +0500 instead of -0500 for EST...)
648 - The scheduler did not ignore trailing whitespace in
649 *.convs files.
db911fcb 650 - The scheduler now forces all processes to exit (kill
651 -9) when it is stopped. This prevents parallel and
652 USB devices from running in the background after cupsd
653 goes away.
7c587866 654 - The cupsParseOptions() function didn't skip trailing
655 whitespace after quoted values.
c3026ddc 656 - More changes to support CUPS on OS/2.
24e80caf 657 - Added Simplified Chinese message catalog.
9495ba14 658 - Added PAM support for IRIX.
c6e1ca5d 659 - The cupsGetPPD() function didn't remove the @server
660 portion of the printer name, and since it would
661 connect immediately to the remote server instead of
662 the local server, the printer would not be found.
8b8cca8e 663 - Classification and page labels were not rotated to
664 match the page orientation.
9ae34eb7 665 - Now set the TCP "no delay" option on network
666 connections to improve performance/response time.
667 - Improved the IRIX printing tools support with patches
668 from Andrea Suatoni.
669 - Added a new PrintcapGUI directive to specify the GUI
670 option panel program to use for the IRIX printing
671 tools support.
672 - The cupsGetDests() function did not check to see if a
673 user-defined default printer (set via lpoptions) still
674 existed.
675 - The pstops filter no longer assumes that the default
676 dictionary is writable when doing N-up processing.
bbfcd9c7 677 - The pstops filter now supports printing N-up with the
678 page-set option.
873a6f43 679 - The imagetoraster filter now supports direct printing
680 of CMYK image data without conversion/correction.
d1c2727f 681 - The IPP backend now reports printer state/error
682 conditions when possible (toner low, media empty,
683 etc.)
bd73c81f 684 - The lpstat command now supports the (undocumented)
685 IRIX -l option ("-lprintername") for a compact job
686 listing for a printer.
687 - The lpstat command now includes printer date/time
688 information in the output (always Jan 01 00:00) to
689 make third-party tools happy.
18843e59 690 - The text filter now supports non-integer cpi and lpi
691 values.
dd5f3453 692 - The Margins field in the CUPS raster header was not
693 initialized by the pstoraster filter.
9aa1f763 694 - Added --with-optim="flags" option to configure script.
695 - Updated the Italian message translations.
696 - Updated the cups.list file to install the correct
697 files.
698 - The pstoraster filter accessed the third element of a
699 2 element array.
5f46b7d1 700 - The scheduler did not setup a status pipe for polling
701 processes, so error messages went to whatever file
702 descriptor 2 was pointing to when they were started.
5fb5dab7 703 - The httpMD5Final() function didn't put a colon between
704 the password and nonce strings.
c5de57af 705 - The pstops filter did not default to Binary data for
706 "%%BeginData:".
4a7e6692 707 - The pstops filter did not stop processing when a line
708 containing a CTRL-D is seen.
aba2fa7e 709 - The scheduler no longer replaces the JobSheets values
710 from the printers.conf and classes.conf files with the
711 classification level, if set. This way the original
712 banner settings are preserved when classification
713 levels are changed or turned off.
8d5eb22e 714 - The serial backend didn't drain the output queue, nor
715 did it restore the original settings.
d2503e02 716 - Updated the default system group under MacOS X.
717 - If no SystemGroup was defined in cupsd.conf, the
718 system default group was not used.
719 - The cups-lpd mini-daemon now supports LPD clients that
720 send multiple control files.
721 - httpConnectEncrypt() now always uses encryption for
722 connections on port 443, since port 443 is reserved
723 for the "https" scheme.
724 - Group authentication via certificates did not work
725 from the web interface for accounts other than
726 "root".
727 - The serial port backend did not clear the OPOST
728 option, which could cause problems with some printers.
729 - The cups-lpd mini-daemon didn't lookup the client IP
730 address properly.
731 - The parallel backend now identifies the polled and
732 interrupt-driven devices under *BSD.
733 - The scheduler allowed the "always" encryption mode
734 inside a Location, which is not valid.
735 - The CUPS startup script now checks for the timezone
736 information under Linux.
737 - Now also map the sides attribute to the JCLDuplex
738 option (if present) in PPD files.
739 - Updated pdftops to Xpdf 0.93a.
740 - Added support for MD5 passwords under Slackware.
741 - Added new AuthType BasicDigest that does Basic
742 authentication using the MD5 password file managed by
743 the lppasswd command.
744 - The banner page attribute substitution code now
745 retains {name} sequences in banner files when the
746 named attribute is undefined. Use {?name} to
747 conditionally substitute an IPP attribute.
748 - The scheduler now ensures that the ServerRoot
749 directory and configuration files are owned by and
750 writable by the User and Group in cupsd.conf.
751 - The USB backend now lists all USB printer devices
752 regardless of whether a printer is connected or not.
753 This allows new USB printers to be connected without
754 restarting cupsd.
755 - Added some more minor performance tweeks to the IPP
756 protocol code to reduce copying and array indexing.
757 - The cupsaddsmb utility now uses the -c option with
758 smbclient and rpcclient to avoid the read length limit
759 for commands on the standard input.
760 - Added an include file to the CRD handling code in
761 pstoraster so that it would compile properly on 64-bit
762 pointer platforms...
763
764
765CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.12
766
767 - Added "Polish" to the list of known languages for PPD
768 files.
769 - Added missing directory definition to cups-config.
770 - The CUPS-Move-Job operation did not set the
771 destination type for the new destination.
772 - The CUPS-Add-Printer operation did not support the
773 allow=all or deny=none values to clear the per-user
774 printer ACLs.
775 - The SetPrinterAttrs() function did not handle invalid
776 PPD files that were missing the required NickName
777 attribute. It now looks for NickName, ModelName, and
778 then substitutes the string "Bad PPD File" for the
779 printer-make-and-model attribute.
780
781
782CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.11
783
784 - Added support for embedded TrueType fonts in PDF
785 files.
786 - Added support for PostScript functions in PDF
787 files.
788 - Added new "cupsaddsmb" utility for exporting
789 CUPS printer drivers to SAMBA/Windows clients.
790 - Added preliminary support for Darwin/MacOS X.
791 - The CUPS-Add-Printer operation no longer allows
792 arbitrary scheme names in device URIs to be used - it
793 now restricts the available schemes to those found in
794 the device list (lpinfo -m).
795 - The ippRead() and ipp_read_file() functions could not
796 handle more than IPP_MAX_VALUES (100) values in a
797 1setOf attribute. These functions have been updated
798 to dynamically allocate more memory as needed, and the
799 IPP_MAX_VALUES constant now represents the allocation
800 increment. [this caused some versions of the
801 GIMP-print drivers to fail since the number of media
802 options exceeded 100...]
803 - The scheduler could crash when BrowseShortNames
804 was set to "No".
805 - The scheduler did not prevent MaxClients from being
806 set to 0, which could cause the scheduler to go in an
807 infinite loop when accepting a request.
808 - Made some performance optimizations in the ippRead()
809 functions to make IPP request/response processing
810 faster.
811 - The accept/reject/enable/disable command did not
812 support properly support the "-h" or default
813 server name.
814 - The scheduler did not save the quota configuration
815 when the job-quota-period attribute was set to 0.
816 - The LPDEST and PRINTER environment variables did not
817 support printer instances.
818 - The text filter now handles more types of boldface and
819 underline formatting.
820 - The cupsTempFd() function did not fail if the
821 temporary directory did not exist; this would cause it
822 to loop indefinitely instead of returning an error
823 (-1).
824 - Stopping (disabling) a printer class did not stop jobs
825 from printing to printers in that class.
826 - The cupsGetDests() function was sending the
827 requested-attributes attribute as a name instead of a
828 keyword; this caused a serious performance problem on
829 slower systems since more information had to be
830 transferred from server to client.
831 - The web interfaces did not always quote < and & in
832 things like the job title. This had the potential for
833 browser-based security violations (on the browser's
834 machine); bug report from SuSE.
835 - The scheduler now treats unauthenticated usernames as
836 case-insensitive when doing quota and allow/deny
837 processing.
838 - The lp command sent the "request ID is ..." message
839 to stderr instead of stdout...
840 - The PostScript filter (pstops) now handles EPS files,
841 adding a showpage command to the files as needed.
842 - The configure script checked for the <stdlib.h> header
843 file before the JPEG libraries; since the JPEG headers
844 can define HAVE_STDLIB_H, the configure check would
845 cause the JPEG check to fail on some systems.
846 - The scheduler now supports localized banner files,
847 using the subdirectory approach, e.g. the "es"
848 subdirectory under /usr/share/cups/banners is used for
849 the Spanish banner files.
850 - Updated the scheduler so it knows the correct
851 language abbreviation to use for all supported
852 PPD LanguageVersion values. The new code also
853 supports country codes as well, so "English-GB"
854 maps to the "en_GB" locale.
855 - The cups-lpd mini-daemon did not support
856 anonymous printing (no username specified).
857 While the username is REQUIRED by RFC-1179,
858 MacOS clients do not send the REQUIRED username
859 information when printing via LPD.
860 - Added many warning and informational messages
861 to cups-lpd where they were missing.
862 - Added Czech message file contributed by SuSE.
863 - The cups-lpd mini-daemon now returns a non-zero
864 status if an invalid destination or job ID is
865 provided.
866 - The scheduler did not honor the KeepAlive setting in
867 cupsd.conf.
868 - Increased the size of the file read/write buffers to
869 32k.
870 - *BSD static library creation fixes.
871 - Use mkstemps() instead of tmpnam() in pdftops whenever
872 possible.
873 - Added httpGetHostByName() function as a wrapper around
874 gethostbyname() - some implementations of this
875 function do not support IP addresses (e.g. MacOS X.)
876 - Added casts to all printf's of file lengths, since
877 there is currently no standard way of formatting long
878 long values.
879 - The client filename field was not cleared in all
880 instances, resulting in old form data being submitted
881 to CGIs.
882 - The httpConnect*() functions now try all available
883 addresses for a host when connecting for the first
884 time.
885 - The pstoraster filter would "lose" all drawing
886 commands when the PageSize was set but the printer
887 bitmap was not reallocated. This was most noticeable
888 with the output from StarOffice 6 beta and would
889 result in a blank page being output...
890 - The IPP backend was sending a PAGE comment even when
891 printing the output from a filter (it should only send
892 page comments when printing files directly...)
893 - The pdftops filter didn't properly map glyph names of
894 embedded Asian TrueType fonts.
895 - Changed the CUPS startup script to look for a program
896 named "cupsd", not just any program with "cupsd" in
897 the name (this caused the apcupsd UPS monitoring
898 daemon to be stopped/restarted...)
899 - The CUPS-Move-Job operation did not change the
900 internal destination name for held jobs, so moved (but
901 held) jobs would still show up as queued on the
902 original destination.
903 - The cups-polld program didn't send the
904 requested-attributes attribute in the
905 CUPS-Get-Printers and CUPS-Get-Classes requests, which
906 made it use more CPU and bandwidth than required.
907 - The scheduler and CUPS API incorrectly added a
908 job-sheets-default attribute for remote printers. This
909 caused banner pages to be omitted from client system
910 prints.
911
912
913CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.10-1
914
915 - Minor fixes to the filter, systemv, and template
916 makefiles to install files properly.
917
918
919CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.10
920
921 - Added a driver for DYMO label printers.
922 - Added new ClassifyOverride directive to allow users
923 to override the classification of individual jobs.
924 - Added new BrowseProtocols directive to control which
925 browse protocols are used (currently CUPS and SLP).
926 - Added SLPv2 support (thanks to Matt Peterson for
927 contributing the initial implementation for CUPS.)
928 - Adding a raw printer on a remote CUPS server now
929 correctly redirects PPD file requests to the remote
930 server.
931 - The serial backend now limits writes to 1/10th
932 second worth of data to avoid buffer overflows
933 with some types of flow control.
934 - The scheduler did not properly process PUT requests,
935 so configuration files could not be uploaded to the
936 server.
937 - The scheduler did not strip trailing whitespace on
938 lines in the configuration files.
939 - The httpWrite() function did not transition the PUT
940 request to the HTTP_STATUS state to get the status
941 from the server.
942 - The scheduler did not properly handle trailing null
943 ("-") filters when testing a driver that sent data
944 to the file: pseudo-backend.
945 - The IPP backend now only sends a document-format of
946 "application/vnd.cups-raw" when printing to another
947 CUPS server using a local printer driver or interface
948 script. Previously the job's document format was
949 used, which was incorrect.
950 - The lpadmin command didn't use the ppd-name attribute
951 with the -m option; this prevented the use of the
952 "raw" model from the command-line.
953 - The pstoraster filter output draft (1-bit) 6-color
954 output in the wrong order; this resulted in yellow
955 being printed instead of black on Stylus Photo
956 printers.
957 - The pdftops filter did not have the Japanese and
958 Chinese text support compiled into it.
959 - The IPP and AppSocket backends did not clear the
960 "waiting for print job to complete" status message,
961 which caused some confusion... :)
962 - The serial backend now opens the port in "no delay"
963 mode to avoid DCD detection problems with some OS's.
964
965
966CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.9-1
967
968 - The configure script did not substitute the
969 correct user and group names.
970 - The configure script did not use the full path
971 to the install-sh script when it was used.
972 - The pstoraster filter did not correctly support
973 DuplexTumble mode for printers that used flip
974 duplexing.
975 - The cups.list.in file was missing from the
976 distribution.
977 - The New DeskJet series driver did not use the
978 correct OrderDependency for the Duplex option.
979 - Use read() instead of fread() to read piped
980 print files in lpr/lp. This avoids a bug in the
981 HP-UX 10.20 fread() function.
982 - Updated the pstoraster filter to use the MIPS_FIXADE
983 system call under IRIX to fix bus error problems on
984 R12000 processors (Ghostscript is not 64-bit clean...)
985 - Some Xerox PPD files (most notably the Phaser 790)
986 have illegal whitespace in the option keyword in the
987 OpenUI line. This caused the PageRegion option to not
988 be recognized properly for the Phaser 790.
989
990
991CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.9
992
993 - Revamped the configure script to use a modular
994 approach for the various tests.
995 - Added --with-openssl-* options to properly reference
996 the OpenSSL libraries in DSOs.
997 - Added --with-cups-user and --with-cups-group
998 options to specify the default user and group for
999 CUPS.
1000 - Added AIX shared library support.
1001 - Added AIX device discovery for the serial and
1002 parallel ports.
1003 - Now use install program or script to install
1004 directories, files, and symlinks.
1005 - Updated pstops filter to use strict handling of EPS
1006 files embedded in a PostScript document. The %%EOF
1007 handling in 1.1.8 caused some dvips files not to
1008 print.
1009 - Fixed yet another memory allocation bug in pstoraster
1010 that would cause it to crash. This fix also ensures
1011 that all memory allocations are done on (at least) a
1012 64-bit boundary.
1013 - Fixed Digest authentication - httpGetSubField() didn't
1014 skip the Digest keyword.
1015 - The scheduler did not properly handle Digest
1016 authentication with the new multiple-group support.
1017 - The scheduler did not allow usernames that were
1018 not in the UNIX password file to be used for Digest
1019 authentication from passwd.md5.
1020 - The scheduler could not scan PPD files that only used
1021 a carriage return (i.e. MacOS PPD files); the new code
1022 is also about 40% faster, so servers with thousands of
1023 PPD files should start much faster now.
1024 - The scheduler now stores the PPD file size and
1025 modification times in the ppds.dat file, so it can now
1026 incrementally update the PPD database from the model
1027 directory, resulting in significantly faster startup
1028 times.
1029 - The lpinfo command did not return a non-zero status
1030 code if an error occurred.
1031 - Fixed a bug in the scheduler's UpdateJob() function.
1032 Basically, all jobs shared the same status buffer, and
1033 the "buffer start" pointer could point to 1 byte
1034 before the beginning of the buffer. The new
1035 implementation uses a separate buffer for each job and
1036 eliminates the buffer start bug.
1037 - The IPP backend would send N copies of a document if
1038 the receiving device didn't support the copies
1039 attribute, even if the upstream driver already added
1040 the necessary commands to generate the copies. This
1041 was most noticeable with HP printers where N * N
1042 copies would come out instead of N.
1043 - The PostScript filter (pstops) did not properly handle
1044 duplex printing on inkjet printers that provide this
1045 option. Copies would be put on the front and back
1046 sides of the duplexed page, and the filter did not
1047 output an even number of pages.
1048 - The backends always caught SIGTERM after they
1049 connected to the printer. This prevented raw jobs
1050 from being cancelled early.
1051 - The cupsSetDests() function now removes any printers,
1052 instances, and options that are not defined by the
1053 user or server. This should prevent old system-wide
1054 options from being used in individual user accounts.
1055 - Updated the EPSON printer driver and added PPDs for
1056 the newer EPSON Stylus printers that only support the
1057 "ESC i" graphics command.
1058 - The lpadmin command didn't allow you to add remote
1059 printers to a local class.
1060 - The lpadmin command didn't allow you to set the
1061 options (quotas, etc.) for a class.
1062 - The scheduler did not load or save the
1063 job-sheets-default attribute for classes.
1064 - The scheduler did not automatically recreate remote
1065 printers that were part of a class.
1066 - It was possible for a printer class to list the same
1067 printer more than once.
1068 - The scheduler now makes a backup copy of classes.conf
1069 and printers.conf before writing the new file.
1070 - The lppasswd program incorrectly asked for a new
1071 password when deleting an existing MD5 password
1072 account.
1073 - The scheduler did not match "/printers/name.ppd"
1074 against a location of "/printers/name".
1075 - The client code did not always handle HTTP encryption
1076 upgrades properly.
1077 - The client code now caches the last Digest password so
1078 it can retry using a new resource path or nonce value,
1079 which are included in the MD5 sum sent to the server.
1080 This should eliminate unnecessary password prompts
1081 when using Digest authentication.
1082 - The lppasswd command didn't have a man page.
1083 - Updated the PJL detection rules to allow the universal
1084 escape to occur anywhere in the first 128 bytes of the
1085 file.
1086 - The cups-polld program would poll servers continuously
1087 with no delay if there was an error contacting the
1088 server.
1089 - The IPP backend would send an empty job-name or
1090 requesting-user-name attribute if the corresponding
1091 job attribute was an empty string. While this is
1092 allowed by the IPP specification, some HP JetDirect
1093 implementations return a client-error-bad-request
1094 error if an empty name attribute value is received.
1095 The new code only sends these attributes if they are
1096 not the empty string.
1097 - At least some versions of the HP JetDirect firmware
1098 do not correctly implement IPP. Added additional
1099 checks to the IPP backend to eliminate extra,
1100 unsupported attributes which should normally be
1101 ignored by a compliant IPP device.
1102 - The scheduler did not copy the complete list of
1103 supported file types into the
1104 document-format-supported attribute. This caused
1105 clients to not send the local file type (such as
1106 application/vnd.cups-raw for raw print files) and the
1107 corresponding bad output in some cases.
1108 - The scheduler did not fully copy attributes from a
1109 set-job-attributes request - string attributes were
1110 only referenced, which could cause cupsd to crash
1111 or behave irratically.
1112 - The lp command didn't send the right value for the
1113 job-hold-until attribute when "-H resume" was
1114 specified.
1115 - The IPP backend now returns as soon as a job is
1116 completed or reported as "pending-held".
1117 - Added new ImplicitAnyClasses and HideImplicitMembers
1118 directives to the cupsd.conf file to make implicit
1119 classes more usable/transparent to the user.
1120 - Clients can now (with the appropriate authentication)
1121 retrieve and update the server configuration files
1122 using HTTP GET and PUT requests.
1123 - The web interface didn't allow you to modify the
1124 location or description of the printer.
1125 - The pdftops filter now uses its own temporary file
1126 function to work with PDF files using LZW compression
1127 (which use the uncompress program or gunzip)
1128 - The SystemGroup directive now supports specification of
1129 multiple groups.
1130 - Added new Include directive to cupsd.conf, a la
1131 Apache.
1132 - Added new pseudo-driver/PPD called "raw" that can be
1133 used to create/convert a raw queue. This also allows
1134 raw queues to be created in the web interface.
1135 - The pdftops filter didn't handle image objects that
1136 used JPEG and Flate compression together.
1137 - The pstops filter counted pages wrong when using the
1138 N-up and even/odd printing options. This prevented
1139 the page-ranges option from working properly.
1140 - Added another fix to pstoraster for a bus error
1141 condition caused by a lack of parenthesis in the
1142 Ghostscript code.
1143 - Added new "natural-scaling" option which scales the
1144 natural size of the image (percent of natural image
1145 size instead of percent of page size.)
1146 - The lppasswd program is now setuid to the CUPS user
1147 instead of root.
1148 - The PPD functions did not allow for PPD files that
1149 defined the page sizes and margins before the page
1150 size options.
1151 - The mime.types file now checks for the PJL "LANGUAGE =
1152 Postscript" command for PostScript files.
1153 - The scheduler did not truncate file: output files.
1154 - The PPD file reading code did not handle options with
1155 raw quotes (") in the human-readable names.
1156 - The pdftops filter now remaps the space character when
1157 (bad) PDF files contain a .notdef glyph for the space
1158 character.
1159
1160
1161CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.8
1162
1163 - Updated spec file to generate separate cups-pstoraster
1164 package for pstoraster.
1165 - The spec file wasn't setting LOGDIR in the install.
1166 - The scheduler might restart a stopped printer after
1167 stopping a print job. Thanks to Florent
1168 Guiliani for finding this bug!
1169 - The init script showed run level 0 for the Red Hat
1170 chkconfig program. This is incorrect because Red Hat
1171 doesn't use run level 0 for shutdown scripts.
1172 - The IPP backend did not handle the
1173 client-error-not-found error when checking the status
1174 of the job that was sent. This caused remote queues
1175 to stop on client machines when the server had job
1176 history disabled.
1177 - Added httpConnectEncrypt() function to avoid
1178 performance penalty for setting up encrypted
1179 connections initially.
1180 - Use httpConnectEncrypt() in all client apps and in the
1181 CUPS API to ensure consistent usage of encryption
1182 throughout.
1183 - Jobs weren't queued to remote classes (fix from
1184 Richard Begg.)
1185 - AIX changes from Richard Begg.
1186 - Fixed the pstops fix for GNOME output - no longer use
1187 the page numbers in the %%Page: comment since GNOME
1188 puts a filename instead (!?@!#?!). There is still an
1189 issue with N-up printing since GNOME defines its fonts
1190 in the first page instead of the document setup section
1191 (pages must be independent according to the DSC spec)
1192 People with GNOME printing problems should consult bug
1193 #54489...
1194 - The imagetops filter produced PAGE: messages when
1195 generating PostScript for a non-PostScript printer
1196 (only affects page-label and Classification
1197 options.)
1198 - The updated pdftops filter was looking for an options
1199 file called xpdf.conf instead of pdftops.conf.
1200
1201
1202CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.7
1203
1204 - Configuration script changes, including new
1205 "--with-docdir=/dir" option to relocate CUPS
1206 documentation and web content according to your
1207 favorite version of the FHS.
1208 - Documentation updates for encryption, SLP, etc.
1209 - New Software Test Plan and automated test script to
1210 test CUPS prior to installation.
1211 - All scheduler configuration files are now case
1212 insensitive to match Apache.
8372ad6b 1213 - Added support for Apache ListenBackLog, Require,
1214 Satisfy, <Limit>, <LimitExcept>, and LimitRequestSize
d2503e02 1215 directives.
1216 - Added support for all Apache log levels...
1217 - Added support for "double" HostNameLookups.
1218 - Added new "RunAsUser" directive to support non-root
1219 configurations on the standard (priviledged) ports.
1220 - Added support for non-root invocation of the lpd
1221 backend (does no reserve a priviledged port, which
1222 might not work with some LPD servers...)
1223 - Added new PrintcapFormat directive to control the
1224 output format of the printcap file (BSD or Solaris
1225 formats are supported at present.)
1226 - The CUPS directory service routines now handle
1227 ECONNREFUSED errors gracefully rather than shutting
1228 all browsing off.
1229 - ippErrorString() now returns the recommended error
1230 messages from the IPP/1.1 Model and Semantics
1231 document.
1232 - Fixed a minor IPP compliance issue with responses
1233 to requests without the attributes-charset or
1234 attributes-natural-language attributes.
1235 - Sun fix: need httpFlush() call for chunked IPP
1236 requests in cupsDoFileRequest().
1237 - httpConnect() now looks up "localhost" by name and
1238 by address (127.0.0.1) for users the go to the
1239 trouble of removing the required localhost entry
1240 in /etc/hosts or on their DNS server...
1241 - Added support for Linux 2.4.x devfs parallel port
1242 filenames (/dev/parallel/N).
1243 - cupsDo[File]Request() and cupsGetPPD() no longer
1244 block trying to reconnect to a crashed or inaccessable
1245 server.
1246 - Added new ppdEmitJCL() function to better handle
1247 PJL commands from PPD files.
1248 - A bug in UpdateJob() would cause the scheduler to
1249 consume 100% CPU until another request was submitted.
1250 - The cancel command did not support the "-" option to
1251 cancel all jobs on all printers.
1252 - The cancel and lprm commands did not support cancelling
1253 the next/current job in the queue.
1254 - The pdftops and pstoraster filters were using unsafe
1255 temporary file functions; while this is not a problem
1256 in normal configurations (the CUPS temporary directory
1257 is restricted), they now use the cupsTempFd() function.
1258 - The mime.types file was missing the recognition rule
1259 for Sun Raster images.
1260 - The admin CGI was passing a printer make string to
1261 ippSetCGIVars() that was being replaced in that
1262 function.
1263 - "lpoptions -l" would resave the options...
1264 - The EPSON drivers now send the "end packet mode"
1265 command when printing to USB devices.
1266 - The scheduler initialized certificates before loading
1267 the cupsd.conf file.
1268 - The scheduler used /dev/random to collect random data,
1269 which could block if insufficient entropy information
1270 had been collected by the kernel. Now use
1271 /dev/urandom.
1272 - Fixed a bug in the whitespace skipping code in
1273 httpGetSubField().
1274 - The LPD backend now supports a new "order" option:
1275 "lpd://server/queue?order=control,data" (default) and
1276 "lpd://server/queue?order=data,control".
1277 - The scheduler enforced a 30 second timeout on all
1278 clients regardless of the Timeout directive and if a
1279 CGI was currently running.
1280 - cupsParseOptions() now sets boolean options to
1281 option=true or option=false.
1282 - The "percent complete" calculations in the LPD backend
1283 could overflow on large files, causing the percentage
1284 to wrap to 0 every 40MB or so.
1285 - Fixed a memory reallocation bug in pstoraster that
1286 could cause it to crash.
1287 - The LPD backend now sanitizes the job title to avoid
1288 potential problems on remote LPD servers.
1289 - The lp command did not send the requesting-user-name
1290 attribute when altering a job.
1291 - The pstops filter did not handle PostScript files with
1292 lines longer than 8191 bytes.
1293 - The scheduler no longer uses inet_addr() to convert IP
1294 addresses in dot format (mmm.nnn.ooo.ppp) to the
1295 32-bit format, since it will not work for IPv6
1296 addresses.
1297 - New "Classification" directive to force labeling of
1298 the current classification on each page.
1299 - New "page-label" attribute to add per-page labels
1300 ("For Official Use Only", "Draft", etc.)
1301 - The scheduler now sets the HTTPS environment variable
1302 for CGI programs when a client connects using
1303 encryption.
1304 - Fixed a recursion bug in the scheduler that could
1305 cause cupsd to crash when a printer was removed.
1306 - The LPDEST and PRINTER environment variables didn't
1307 support instances.
1308 - Dropped the "file" backend from the device list that
1309 is reported, since it is only available for *testing*
1310 and should never be used in a production environment.
1311 The file: device can still be used, but it won't show
1312 up in the list of devices from lpinfo or the web
1313 interface.
1314 - Added support for /dev/lpa# parallel ports under *BSD.
1315 - Added META variables to the CGI header template to
1316 prevent caching of the results.
1317 - Fixed an unaligned memory buffer for the pstoraster
1318 clist states; this caused bus errors for some
1319 combinations of printers, drivers, and options.
1320 - Re-added black reduction for colorful colors; this
1321 helps to prevent dark colors from getting desaturated.
1322 (only used when converting RGB to CMYK)
1323 - Added two new directives - MaxJobsPerPrinter and
1324 MaxJobsPerUser - to allow an administrator to set
1325 the maximum number of pending jobs in a queue or
1326 submitted by a user.
1327 - The scheduler no longer stops a printer if it can't
1328 create the status pipe or run the filters or backend.
1329 This will allow heavily loaded servers to service
1330 clients or start print jobs as the load allows.
1331 - Fixed a bug in the Set-Job-Attributes code that could
1332 crash the scheduler (patch from Martin Zielinski)
1333 - cupsSetDests() did not quote option values with
1334 embedded spaces.
1335 - Added support for the Enable-Printer and
1336 Disable-Printer extension operations (same as
1337 CUPS-Accept-Jobs and CUPS-Reject-Jobs.)
1338 - The AppSocket and IPP backends now wait for the print
1339 job to be finished before exiting; this should prevent
1340 the loss of print jobs with older JetDirect firmware
1341 and make consecutive print jobs print faster.
1342 - The BMP loading code did not handle resolution values
1343 of 0. This is a problem with BMP image files produced
1344 by the GIMP.
1345 - The HTTP Upgrade code (upgrade to TLS encryption)
1346 bypassed the authentication checks.
1347 - The HTTP Upgrade code did not send a 426 status code
1348 to the client and end the current request. This caused
1349 a race condition between the client and server for the
1350 upgrade to TLS.
1351 - Fixed a bug in the EOF and Trailer detection code in
1352 the pstops filter.
1353 - The imagetoraster filter did not add the margins to
1354 the custom page size in the raster header.
1355 - The imagetops filter did not adjust the custom page
1356 size to the size of the printed image.
1357 - The imagetops filter did not include DSC comments
1358 which are required by some printers.
1359 - The imagetops filter did not insert newlines in
1360 Base85 encoded output, causing files to contain
1361 lines longer than 255 characters (violation of the
1362 DSC).
1363 - Added support for the DeskJet 900 series duplexer
1364 and CRET color modes in the HP driver.
1365 - Added support for PPD-defined margins in the HP
1366 driver.
1367 - Fixed the debugging output from pstoraster - the
1368 font list was not terminated by a newline.
1369 - Some versions of the HP-UX pam_unix authentication
1370 module apparently do not pass the appdata_ptr argument
1371 to the conversation function, preventing the scheduler
1372 from authenticating users using PAM under HP-UX. A
1373 workaround using a static variable has been added to
1374 address this problem.
1375 - Fixed a bug in the scheduler SortPrinters() function
1376 that could cause printers to disappear or the
1377 scheduler to crash when adding a printer.
1378 - Changed the pstops filter to not do per-page filtering
1379 if the file does not conform to at least version 3.0
1380 of the document structuring conventions. This seems
1381 to "fix" printing with broken apps.
1382 - The image filters did not handle older TIFF files that
1383 lacked the samples-per-pixel and bits-per-pixel tags.
1384 - Added new cupsGetJobs() and cupsFreeJobs() functions
1385 to manage print jobs.
1386 - cupsEncodeOptions() would encode names of 0 length and
1387 cupsAddOption() and cupsParseOptions() would add names
1388 of 0 length.
1389 - The scheduler might block waiting for status messages
1390 after starting a new print job. Thanks to Florent
1391 Guiliani for finding this bug!
1392
1393
1394CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.6-3
1395
1396 - The configure script put the JPEG library before the
1397 TIFF library; this caused problems in some
1398 configurations since the TIFF library also supports
1399 JPEG compression of TIFF images.
1400 - Updated the configure script and makefiles to handle
1401 admin man pages with the "1m" extension (HP-UX, IRIX,
1402 Solaris, Tru64) and in odd directories (IRIX)
1403 - The updated cupsTempFile() function did not return
1404 the filename when called with a filename buffer of
1405 NULL (previously it used a static buffer.)
1406 - FreeBSD uses /dev/unlptN, but NetBSD and OpenBSD use
1407 /dev/ulptN.
1408 - DeletePrinter() didn't remove the printer from any
1409 classes it was a member of.
1410 - DeletePrinterFromClass() didn't preserve the
1411 implicit status of a class.
1412 - DeletePrinterFromClasses() didn't remove printers
1413 from implicit classes.
1414 - StartJob() didn't send the job-sheets, job-priority,
1415 and job-hold-until attributes to remote printers.
1416 - LoadAllJobs() was looking for job-sheets-completed
1417 instead of job-media-sheets-completed. This would
1418 prevent accumulation of page data after a restart
1419 of the scheduler.
1420 - The pstops and imagetops filters now generate copies
1421 using the appropriate method for a Level 1, 2, or 3
1422 printer since some Level 2/3 printers don't support
1423 the /#copies variable anymore.
1424 - The man page for cups-lpd did not mention the "-o"
1425 option.
1426 - The IPP backend didn't handle version-not-supported
1427 errors and revert to IPP/1.0 (previously it only checked
1428 for a bad-request error)
1429 - Caldera fix: lpc now reports unimplemented commands as
1430 unimplemented, not invalid.
1431 - Caldera fix: lpq didn't recognize BSD lpq "-a" option.
1432 - Caldera fix: lpr didn't recognize BSD lpr "-1", "-2",
1433 "-3", "-4", "-q", or "-U" options.
1434 - RedHat fixes: patches to GNU Ghostscript
1435 - SuSE fix: temp file creation patch to GNU Ghostscript
1436 (pstoraster).
1437 - SuSE fix: remove cgi-bin/abort.c and cgi-bin/email.c,
1438 which are not used.
1439 - SuSE fix: missing NULL check in cgi_initialize_post().
1440 - SuSE fix: potential buffer overflows in
1441 cgi_initialize_string().
1442 - SuSE fix: potential buffer overflows in
1443 ippSetCGIVars()
1444 - SuSE fix: more NULL checks in ppdOpen(); also make
1445 sure that all memory is freed on error to avoid memory
1446 leaks.
1447 - SuSE fix: Exit from child if setgid() or setuid()
1448 fails.
1449 - SuSE fix: Added setgroups() calls after setgid() and
1450 setuid() calls.
1451 - SuSE fix: potential buffer overflows in httpEncode64()
1452 calls.
1453 - SuSE fix: potential buffer overflows in httpSeparate()
1454 - SuSE fix: potential buffer overflows in ippWrite() for
1455 bad input.
1456 - SuSE fix: potential nul skip in ppd_decode() for
1457 missing hex digits.
1458
1459
1460CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.6-2
1461
1462 - Added changes to support NetBSD startup scripts.
1463 - Added separate compiler options for pstoraster
1464 (Ghostscript) to avoid compiler-induced errors
1465 from Ghostscript's twisted code.
1466 - The mime.types file contained syntax errors.
1467 - Updated the *BSD USB device filenames to use
1468 the /dev/unlptN files so that the USB device
1469 is not reset prior to printing (causes print
1470 corruption on many printers)
1471 - Added new cupsTempFd() function to avoid serious
1472 security bug in glibc fopen() function. The glibc
1473 fopen() function unlinks a file before creating it,
1474 which opens up possible symlink attacks.
1475 - Now reject 0-length names in add-printer and add-class
1476 requests.
1477 - Fix for pstoraster when ZLIB is not available.
1478 - cupsGetPPD() didn't reconnect when a HTTP connection
1479 was lost.
1480 - SuSE fix: httpConnect() didn't check that the
1481 value from gethostbyname() was a valid IPv4 address.
1482 - SuSE fix: httpConnect() didn't allow file descriptor 0
1483 to be used for a socket.
1484 - SuSE fix: ippRead() didn't confirm that all values in
1485 a set were numeric or string types.
1486 - SuSE fix: lppasswd race condition fixes.
1487 - SuSE fix: directive names could overflow buffer when
1488 reading *.conf files.
1489 - SuSE fix: HEAD requests for PPD files did not use the
1490 same logic as GET requests.
1491 - SuSE fix: possible buffer overflow when adding
1492 /index.html to requested directory name.
1493 - SuSE fix: possible buffer overflow when converting
1494 IPP attributes to string options for filters.
1495 - SuSE fix: creating file: device output with mode 0666
1496 instead of mode 0600.
1497 - SuSE fix: creating job info files with mode 0640
1498 instead of 0600.
1499 - SuSE fix: don't rely on snprintf() for including
1500 system name in log filenames.
1501 - SuSE fix: add bounds checking when copying quoted
1502 and hex strings.
1503
1504
1505CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.6-1
1506
1507 - Added configure check for getting the correct
1508 strftime() format string; %c is not Y2k safe,
1509 and %KC and NULL are not universally supported.
1510
1511
1512CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.6
1513
1514 - Fixed another possible DoS attack in httpGets()
1515 - Added check for "LANGUAGE = PCL" and "LANGUAGE =
1516 POSTSCRIPT" in mime.types.
1517 - Resolution options were not being passed into the
1518 filter programs properly.
1519 - The default compiler options for GCC no longer include
1520 "-g3", which apparently is deprecated in newer
1521 versions of GCC.
1522 - CheckJobs() could cause cupsd to crash if a job is
1523 cancelled in StartJob().
1524 - The printers.conf and classes.conf files are now
1525 written with restricted permissions.
1526 - The round-robin algorithm used by FindAvailablePrinter()
1527 had problems; fixes contributed by Joel Fredrikson.
1528 - If LoadAllJobs() is unable to determine the file type
1529 of a print job, assume "application/vnd.cups-raw".
1530 - The web interface now provides a job_printer_name
1531 value for any corresponding job_printer_uri value.
1532 - The cups-lpd mini-daemon now logs the client address
1533 and hostname as well as all commands and errors in the
1534 syslog file.
1535 - The IPP backend now detects the supported file formats
1536 and only specifies the document format if it is
1537 supported. This makes IPP printing to network print
1538 servers and cards more reliable without affecting the
1539 capabilities of CUPS servers.
1540 - The time_at_xyz attributes are now converted to human-
1541 readable dates and times for the web interfaces.
1542 - The HP and EPSON sample drivers now correctly catch
1543 signals and eject the current page when a job is
1544 cancelled.
1545 - Fixed bug in CGI code - did not ignore control
1546 characters (e.g. newlines) in form data. This caused
1547 sporatic web interface problems.
1548 - The file type logging code in the scheduler referenced
1549 the optional document-format attribute; the new code
1550 uses the resolved MIME type instead.
1551 - The client.conf parsing code now removes trailing
1552 whitespace.
1553 - The MaxJobs directive was being treated as a boolean
1554 instead of an integer.
1555 - The scheduler would not timeout remote printers if
1556 BrowseInterval was set to 0.
1557 - The lpadmin command now supports setting of options
1558 and user-level access control.
1559 - Added "-E" option to all printing commands to force
1560 encryption.
1561 - The client code did not consume the response to the
1562 OPTIONS request when switching to secure mode.
1563 - The scheduler did not output a Content-Length field
1564 when responding to an OPTIONS request.
1565 - Added documentation on using cups-lpd with xinetd
1566 to the man page.
1567 - The socket backend now starts retries at 5 seconds and
1568 increases the interval to 30 seconds. This should
1569 provide faster printing when multiple jobs/files are
1570 queued for a printer.
1571 - The filters and backends no longer buffer output to
1572 stderr. This should provide much more accurate status
1573 reporting.
1574
1575
1576CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.5-2
1577
1578 - Fixed configure check for OpenSSL to work with RSA
1579 code.
1580 - Added configure check for <sys/ioctl.h>, and use this
1581 check in backend/serial.c.
1582 - Updated configure script handling of data,
1583 configuration, and state directories to use datadir,
1584 sysconfdir, and localstatedir variables.
1585 - NetBSD uses different serial port filenames than
1586 FreeBSD and OpenBSD.
1587 - The pdftops filter didn't need some X-specific files.
1588 - The scheduler makefile doesn't do a chown anymore when
1589 installing (cupsd did this automatically on startup
1590 anyways)
1591
1592
1593CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.5-1
1594
1595 - There was a typo in the top-level Makefile
1596 - The top-level Makefile did not install an init script
1597 for run level 5.
1598 - The configure script did not add the "crypto" library
1599 when checking for the OpenSSL library.
1600 - The OKIDATA PPD files were missing.
1601 - The config.h.in file defined the wrong version number.
1602 - The serial backend did not define "funky_hex" under *BSD.
1603 - Updated the Visual C++ project files and some of the
1604 CUPS API sources to compile under Windows again.
1605
1606
1607CHANGES IN CUPS V1.1.5
1608
1609 - Security updates - new default configuration does
1610 not broadcast printer information and only allows
1611 access from the local system.
1612 - EXPERIMENTAL encryption support - CUPS now optionally
1613 supports TLS/SSL encryption via the OpenSSL library.
1614 - Documentation updates.
1615 - Makefile/configure script updates.
1616 - The RPM spec file didn't work out-of-the-box under
1617 RedHat or Mandrake.
1618 - Minor code cleanup to remove extraneous compiler
1619 warnings.
1620 - cupsTempFile() was using %p for the temporary
1621 filename; this should have been %08x (just 8 digit
1622 hex)
1623 - Deleting a printer with active print jobs would still
1624 crash the server.
1625 - ippWrite() and ipp_write_file() didn't send the
1626 correct value length for name-with-language and
1627 text-with-language attributes.
1628 - Updated IPP code to support copied strings (that
1629 should not be freed); this provides slightly more
1630 efficient IPP server performance.
1631 - Updated PDF filter to Xpdf 0.91.
1632 - httpGets() could go into an infinite loop if a line
1633 longer than the input buffer size was sent by a
1634 client. This could be used in a Denial-of-Service
1635 attack.
1636 - The lpstat and CUPS API functions now request only the
1637 data required when getting the list of printer or
1638 class information. This should improve performance
1639 with large numbers of printers on slower machines.
1640 - The scheduler was always enforcing the FilterLimit,
1641 even if FilterLimit was set to 0.
1642 - Updated the Linux USB backend to support Mandrake's
1643 /dev/usb/usblp# filenames.
1644 - The PRINTER and LPDEST environment variables did not
1645 override the lpoptions default printer.
1646 - The PPD read functions incorrectly included trailing
1647 characters (usually whitespace) after quoted string
1648 attributes.
1649 - The multiple-document-handling attribute handling code
1650 did not check for the correct value for collated
1651 copies (separate-documents-uncollated-copies).
1652 - The EPSON driver did not work with OKIDATA printers in
1653 EPSON emulation mode (needed change-emulation command)
1654 - The HP-GL/2 filter did not scale the plot properly in
1655 scale mode 2.
1656 - Added PPD files for 9-pin and 24-pin OKIDATA printers.
1657 - The httpSeparate() function didn't handle passwords
1658 that started with a number.
1659 - ippDelete() could free the character set string
1660 multiple times in name-with-language and
1661 text-with-language attributes.
1662 - The scheduler would access freed memory right after
1663 freeing it (for debug messages); these parts of the
1664 code have been reordered to avoid this situation
1665 which was causing sporatic errors and crashes.
1666 - The ppdClose() function didn't free all of the strings
1667 in the ppd_file_t structure.
1668 - The LoadAllJobs() function in the scheduler did not
1669 close the spool directory.
1670 - Changed all sprintf's that use string formats to
1671 snprintf's, even if the destination buffer is
1672 larger than the source string(s); this protects
1673 against buffer overflows caused outside of CUPS...
1674 - Changed all strcpy's to strncpy's between local and
1675 global variables, even if the destination buffer is
1676 larger than the source string; this protects
1677 against buffer overflows caused outside of CUPS...
1678 - The CUPS certificate functions didn't use the
1679 CUPS_SERVERROOT environment variable when set.
1680 - The directory services code was copying instead of
1681 comparing the remote printer info, resulting in
1682 unnecessary updates of the printer attributes for
1683 remote printers.
1684 - Added new mime.types rules to allow automatic raw
1685 printing of PCL and ESC/P files; PJL headers are
1686 parsed to differentiate between PostScript and
1687 PCL job files. This should eliminate a lot of
1688 the reports of SAMBA printing problems due to
1689 the missing "-oraw" or "-l" options.
1690 - The mimeLoadType() function didn't handle the
1691 3-argument contains() function.
1692 - The LoadPPDs() function in the scheduler didn't
1693 properly set the alloc_ppds variable or handle a PPD
1694 database containing 0 printers.
1695 - The scheduler FindAvailablePrinter() function didn't
1696 use the same queuing logic as the CheckJobs()
1697 function. This caused classes to stall if a remote
1698 printer was always busy.
1699 - Jobs are now assigned to printers in a class
1700 round-robin style. This should prevent the first
1701 server in the class from bearing the brunt of the
1702 jobs.
1703 - The scheduler's LoadAllJobs() function didn't always
1704 restore remote printers for queued jobs on startup.
1705 - The serial backend didn't support the higher baud
1706 rates with the old termios interface. It now supports
1707 57600 and 115200 baud.
1708 - The serial backend now supports different types of
1709 flow control; previously it ignored the flow=XYZ
1710 option in the device URI.
1711 - The serial backend now supports DTR/DSR flow control,
1712 which is popular on dot-matrix printers (access with
1713 "flow=dtrdsr" in the device URI)
1714 - Added new job-originating-host-name attribute for
1715 jobs. The new attribute provides the hostname or
1716 IP address of the machine that submitted the job.
1717 - The set-job-attributes code no longer allows read-only
1718 job attributes to be changed.
1719 - Expanded the click area for the navigation bar in the
1720 web interface.
1721 - Updated the lp and cancel commands to support all of
1722 the Solaris print options (some are simply ignored
1723 since they do not map)
1724 - Updated the scheduler to limit the number of file
1725 descriptors to the maximum select() set size. This
1726 was causing problems on Solaris systems where the
1727 max FD count was increased beyond 1024.
1728 - The scheduler's LoadDevices() function was getting
1729 interrupted by the SIGCHLD signal handler; now ignore
1730 child signals while loading devices.
1731 - Added quota and allow/deny user support for printers
1732 and classes.
1733 - Removed black/CMY adjustment code from the PS and
1734 image file RIPs; it was interfering with some CUPS
1735 driver dithering code.
1736 - The lpc program stopped listing the queue statuses
1737 after the first active printer.
1738 - The cups-lpd program used an output format that the
1739 Solaris printing system did not understand.
1740 - Updated the lpq program to use the Solaris format
1741 except under Tru64 UNIX.
1742 - Some DEC PPD files incorrectly use "Off" for the null
1743 value in UI constraints. Added "Off" to the list of
1744 accepted null values.
1745 - Changed the *BSD define constants to __*BSD__ in all
1746 of the backends.
1747 - Added support for "lpstat printername", which is an
1748 undocumented feature in Solaris.
1749 - The HP-GL/2 filter now only sets the plot size if it
1750 is set in the plot file.
1751 - The lpmove command wasn't sending the requesting
1752 user name, causing it to always fail.
1753 - Updated the cupsTempFile() code to use GetTempPath()
1754 under Windows.
1755 - The cups-lpd mini-daemon didn't limit the number of
1756 data files accepted, didn't use cupsTempFile(),
1757 didn't handle control file job information in any
1758 order, and didn't free job options after printing
1759 a file.
1760 - The scheduler copy_banner() function did not
1761 explicitly set the owner and permissions of the banner
1762 files, which could prevent the banner pages from
1763 printing on some systems.
1764 - The lpstat program wasn't listing remote classes.
1765 - The scheduler did not verify that the printer-uri
1766 attribute was specified in all requests that required
1767 it.
1768
1769
1770CHANGES IN CUPS v1.1.4
1771
1772 - Makefile and configure script fixes.
1773 - **** Changed the default Printcap setting **** to
1774 /etc/printcap. There are just too many people asking
1775 why application XYZ doesn't see their printers!
1776 - The web admin interface now displays an error if it
1777 can't get the list of printer drivers from cupsd.
1778 - The IPP backend was putting the copies option before
1779 the other job options were set. This caused the IPP
1780 request to contain attribute groups in the wrong
1781 order, which prevented remote printing.
1782 - Added checks in scheduler to free memory used for
1783 IPP requests and language information when closing
1784 a client connection.
1785 - Fixed the duplex option in the HP LaserJet driver. It
1786 should now work with all LaserJet printers (and
1787 compatibles)
1788 - The add-printer web interface didn't initialize the
1789 "old info" data pointer, which caused random crashes
1790 on many OS's.
1791 - Fixed many page sizes defined in the Level 1
1792 compatibility file "gs_statd.ps" to match reality.
1793 - Fixed another bug in the setpagedevice "code" in
1794 Ghostscript. It should now accept all standard
1795 Adobe attributes on all platforms.
1796 - Fixed pstoraster so that it reallocates memory for
1797 color depth changes as well as size/resolution
1798 changes. This removes an ordering constraint on
1799 the color, page size, and resolution options in
1800 PPD files.
1801 - The IPP backend didn't use the job's character set
1802 when the destination printer supported it. This
1803 caused problems when printing text files to other
1804 CUPS servers.
1805 - Updated the logic used to determine when to rebuild
1806 the PPD file database. The scheduler now checks the
1807 dates and the number of PPD files (was just checking
1808 the dates.)
1809 - Updated the ippSetCGIVars() function (used by the
1810 web interfaces) to only filter valid string values.
1811 - The PostScript filter was scaling 2-up pages
1812 incorrectly. This caused the edges of some pages to
1813 be clipped.
1814
1815
1816CHANGES IN CUPS v1.1.3
1817
1818 - Makefile fixes.
1819 - RPM spec file changes.
1820 - Documentation updates.
1821 - Enabled pstoraster debug messages for everything
1822 (only logged when LogLevel set to "debug"...)
1823 - Changed the Input/OutputAttributes fix in
1824 pstoraster so that it works on all platforms.
1825 - The HP-GL/2 filter didn't set the right green
1826 color value in encoded polylines or text.
1827 - Updated the "fitplot" code to handle plot sizes
1828 specified as "PSwidth,length" and "PSlength,width".
1829 - Updated the Linux parallel and USB backends to open
1830 the device files prior to looking in /proc for
1831 autoprobe info. This makes sure that loadable device
1832 driver modules are in fact loaded...
1833 - Added new FilterLimit directive to limit the number
1834 of processing jobs/filters on a system.
1835 - set-job-attributes didn't change the job-state to
1836 held/pending when the job-hold-until attribute was
1837 specified.
1838 - set-job-attributes didn't save the new job attributes.
1839 - Now change the "requesting-user-name" attribute in
1840 requests from remote systems to "remroot" when an
1841 unauthenticated "root" user is sent. This can be
1842 changed using the new RemoteRoot directive in
1843 cupsd.conf.
1844 - The cancel-job, hold-job, release-job, and restart-job
1845 operations didn't log the authenticated username.
1846 - The cups-lpd mini-daemon now checks for a
1847 document-format option before forcing raw mode with
1848 filter mode 'l'.
1849 - The cups-lpd mini-daemon now supports "-o" options
1850 on the command-line (passed by inetd) to set global
1851 defaults for all print queues.
1852 - The pstops filter assumed that a file with a Trailer
1853 comment would also have an EOF comment.
1854 - Added new cupsSetPasswordCB(), cupsSetServer(),
1855 cupsSetUser(), and ippSetPort() functions to better
1856 support client applications (especially GUIs...)
1857 - The CUPS-add-class and CUPS-add-printer operations
1858 didn't reset the printer-name attribute on remote
1859 print queues that had to be renamed when a local
1860 printer was defined with the same name.
1861 - The lpoptions command now supports a "-r" option to
1862 remove options for a printer or instance.
1863 - The lpadmin and admin.cgi programs no longer allow
1864 class and printer names to begin with a number; this
1865 caused the command-line utilities to become confused.
1866 - The Linux USB backend now looks for both the parallel
1867 and usblp driver names in the device list.
1868 - Added a new FontPath directive to cupsd.conf, and also
1869 a "--with-fontpath" option for the configure script to
1870 specify alternate font paths for pstoraster.
1871 - The CUPS-move-job operation didn't update the
1872 job-printer-uri attribute.
1873 - The scheduler only looked up printers and classes by
1874 name in IPP requests, instead of using the full URI.
1875 This caused problems with KUPS and friends with
1876 remote printers.
1877 - The scheduler now handles better localization of
1878 hostnames (e.g. server is host.foo.com, remote is
1879 host.subfoo.foo.com, localized is not host.subfoo...)
1880 - The scheduler logging functions now use a common
1881 log file checking/rotation function (courtesy of
1882 Crutcher Dunnavant at Red Hat)
1883 - The scheduler could accept more client connections
1884 than it allocated for if more than one Port or Listen
1885 line was present in cupsd.conf.
1886 - Other minor scheduler performance tweeks.
1887 - The lpq and lprm commands didn't support the default
1888 printer set using lpoptions.
1889 - The lpoptions command now supports a "-l" option to
1890 list the printer-specific options and their current
1891 settings.
1892 - The web printer and class lists now show a link to the
1893 default printer or class at the top of the page.
1894 - The text filter now supports pretty printing of shell
1895 and perl scripts as well as C/C++ source files.
1896 - The top and bottom margins were reversed for landscape
1897 text printing.
1898 - The lpq and lprm commands didn't understand printer
1899 instances.
1900 - The scheduler only selected on the first 100 file
1901 descriptors instead of the maximum file descriptor
1902 limit.
1903 - The scheduler client, listener, and mainline functions
1904 now share code to disable and enable monitoring for
1905 new client connections.
1906 - The imagetoraster filter didn't support all of the
1907 required pagedevice parameters.
1908 - The serial backend now checks for 100 serial ports
1909 under Linux.
1910 - The scheduler used sscanf() to pull out the remote
1911 printer location, description, and make/model strings,
1912 but if any of these options was empty then sscanf()
1913 would stop processing.
1914 - Added "debug2" log level to provide a little less
1915 verbose debugging information at the "debug" level.
1916 - The scheduler would crash if you stopped a printer
1917 that was currently printing a job.
1918 - The scheduler incorrectly allowed jobs in the cancelled,
1919 aborted, or completed state to be cancelled.
1920 - The image filters did not load TIFF images properly
1921 for bottom-to-top and right-to-left orientations.
1922 - Added new cupsEncodeOptions() function to encode
1923 CUPS options as IPP job attributes.
1924 - The IPP backend, LPD mini-daemon, client commands,
1925 and CUPS API did not properly encode multiple
1926 option values separated by commas.
1927 - Added new scheduler malloc logging in debug mode
1928 (provides summary of total arena size, allocated,
1929 and free bytes once a minute)
1930 - The EPM-based distributions didn't install the
1931 correct symlinks for a few man pages.
1932 - Fixed a memory leak in the scheduler - wasn't
1933 freeing old filters when deleting or renaming
1934 printers.
1935 - The scheduler now queries the primary IP address
1936 for the name of the server and maps any incoming
1937 requests from that address to the server name.
1938 This fixes web admin mapping problems from
1939 server.domain.com to localhost.
1940 - The web printer modify interface now remembers
1941 the previous device and driver settings (except
1942 for serial ports.)
1943 - The job-k-octets attribute is now stored as part of
1944 the job attributes; this preserves the information
1945 after a job is completed when job file history is
1946 turned off.
1947 - Dropped option sub-group parsing code for the moment,
1948 since many Xerox PPD files abuse this feature in PPD
1949 files and don't follow the hierarchy rules.
1950 - Added new wrapper code around options so that duplex
1951 options for some HP printers don't prevent prints.
1952 - Added support for Digital UNIX/Tru64 UNIX/OSF/1 format
1953 for "lpstat -v" output.
1954 - Now show the URI for remote printers instead of
1955 /dev/null in "lpstat -v" output.
1956 - Creating classes and adding printers to a class with
1957 the lpadmin command didn't work.
1958 - The banner pages and test page should now format
1959 correctly in both portrait and landscape orientations.
1960 - Updated banner page substitution so that { can appear
1961 by itself without quoting.
1962
1963
1964CHANGES IN CUPS v1.1.2
1965
1966 - Makefile/configure fixes
1967 - RPM spec file and EPM list file fixes
1968 - The cupsTempFile() function now uses a different
1969 algorithm for generating temp files and "reserves"
1970 them to avoid possible security exploitation.
1971 - Now use /dev/random (if available) to seed the random
1972 number generator for certificates.
1973 - The /var/spool/cups and /var/spool/cups/tmp directories
1974 were incorrectly owned by root; they are now owned by
1975 the filter user, typically "lp".
1976 - The scheduler now resets the permissions on the spool
1977 and temp directories as needed to match the filter
1978 user.
1979 - Now expose ppdCollect() as an externally callable
1980 function.
1981 - The image filters now support filtering from the
1982 standard input.
1983 - The imagetoraster filter now collects all printer
1984 options and job patch files and applies them to the
1985 page header as needed.
1986 - Added format and banner options to LPD backend.
1987 - The send-document operation didn't start a job
1988 immediately when last-document was true.
1989 - The set-job-attributes operation didn't correctly
1990 replace the current job-hold-until value.
1991 - Removed the option wrapper code from ppdEmit() and
1992 friends since it caused problems with Ghostscript
1993 and many PS printers.
1994 - Was setting TZ environment variable twice for job
1995 filters.
1996 - Added syslog logging in cups-lpd to aide in
1997 debugging problems.
1998 - The HP-UX parallel port backend did not list the
1999 available parallel ports on some systems (printf
2000 calling problem...)
2001 - The lp and lpr commands overrode user options if
2002 -d/-P were specified after -o.
2003 - The scheduler would crash with a */* filter.
2004 - Added support for a "default" filter for unknown file
2005 types. The example provided in the mime.types and
2006 mime.convs file prints unknown files as if "-oraw" was
2007 specified for the job. This functionality is disabled
2008 by default.
2009 - The "compatibility" mode fix for older backends did not
2010 work for smbspool. Added a workaround for it.
2011 - The HP-GL/2 filter didn't perform the right pen scaling
2012 with some files and the "fitplot" option.
2013 - New Software Performance Specification document that
2014 describes the memory, disk, and CPU usage of all the
2015 CUPS software.
2016
2017
2018CHANGES IN CUPS v1.1.1
2019
2020 - The pstoraster Makefile still referenced one of the
2021 old PDF filter files.
2022 - The filter Makefile used INSTALL_DATA instead of
2023 INSTALL_LIB to install the CUPS image library.
2024 - The administration CGI didn't work properly with
2025 network devices.
2026 - The BrowseACL variable was not updated after the
2027 cupsd.conf file was loaded.
2028 - The lpd mini-daemon didn't support printer instances.
2029 - Now use a default umask of 077 for child processes.
2030 - Now put temp files in /var/spool/cups/tmp for child
2031 processes and the root user, unless TMPDIR or TempDir
2032 is defined otherwise.
2033 - cupsGetPPD() no longer uses easy-to-guess filenames.
2034 - The CUPS-Delete-Class and CUPS-Delete-Printer
2035 operations now save classes.conf file as needed.
2036 - The lppasswd command wouldn't add a user.
2037 - The ppdOpen() function could cause a segfault if a
2038 0-length PPD file was read.
2039 - The image filters were not handling images with
2040 different X and Y resolutions properly.
2041 - The imagetoraster filter defaulted to RGB output
2042 instead of black output like pstoraster.
2043 - The pstops filter didn't handle binary data properly.
2044 - The pstops filter didn't handle copies properly for
2045 PS files lacking DSC comments.
2046 - The pstops filter now appends %%EOF to the end of
2047 documents if they don't have it.
2048 - The cupsGetPPD() function didn't work with remote
2049 printers lacking the @server in the name.
2050 - The configure script didn't work right when only
2051 --prefix was specified.
2052 - The ppdEmit() code now wraps all printer commands so
2053 that buggy PostScript printers will still print a file
2054 after receiving an option that isn't available.
2055 - Fixed the DeskJet margin bug, and disabled 600dpi
2056 color mode until it can be fixed.
2057 - The cupsAddDest() function didn't sort instances
2058 correctly in all cases.
2059 - The time-at-xyz attributes now expand to the date and
2060 time in banner files.
2061
2062
2063CHANGES IN CUPS v1.1
2064
2065 - Documentation updates.
2066 - Configuration script updates.
2067 - Didn't map charset and language value strings to lowercase
2068 and _ to - as required by SLP and IPP.
2069 - ppdLoadXYZ() didn't add the list of available fonts to the
2070 ppd_file_t structure.
2071 - The text filter common code was freeing the PPD file data
2072 before it was used.
2073 - The text filter now embeds missing fonts.
2074 - The CGI interface now maps local access to the server to
2075 the localhost address.
2076 - The HP-GL/2 filter didn't use the specified (or default)
2077 color ranges, resulting in strange colors.
2078 - The HP-GL/2 filter didn't default to no input window, which
2079 caused unnecessary clipping of plots.
2080 - Integrated Xpdf's pdftops filter into CUPS, which is a
2081 lightweight and reliable replacement for Ghostscript's
2082 PDF support.
2083 - Removed all PDF support from Ghostscript.
2084 - Updated HP driver to set top margin; this seems to fix
2085 the offset problem seen on HP DeskJet printers.
2086 - Fixed dependencies on the ZLIB and JPEG libraries in
2087 pstoraster.
2088 - The lpr command wasn't using the lpoptions defined by
2089 the user.
2090 - The lpr command would segfault if the CUPS server was
2091 not running.
2092 - The top-level makefile was not installing the CUPS
2093 initialization script. It now does so if it sees there
2094 is an init.d directory in /sbin, /etc/rc.d, or /etc.
2095 - "lpstat -v all" didn't work.
2096 - pstoraster would crash on some platforms doing the
2097 setpagedevice operator.
2098 - The web administration interface now allows you to set
2099 the default banner pages.
2100 - Images can now be positioned on the page using the new
2101 "position" option.
2102 - The AccessLog, ErrorLog, and PageLog directives now
2103 support "%s" to insert the server name.
2104 - Added a new BrowseShortNames directive to allow for
2105 short remote printer names ("printer" instead of
2106 "printer@server") when possible.
2107 - The scheduler could crash if given an invalid PPD file
2108 with no PageSize attributes.
2109 - Updated the serial, parallel, and usb backends to do
2110 multiple writes and ignore ioctl() errors as needed;
2111 this should fix problems with serial printing on old
2112 serial drivers and with the UltraSPARC parallel port
2113 driver under Solaris 2.7.
2114 - Now propagate LD_LIBRARY_PATH to child processes from
2115 cupsd.
2116 - New DataDir directive for installing in alternate
2117 locations.
2118 - New CUPS_SERVERROOT and CUPS_DATADIR environment
2119 variables to specify installation directories as
2120 needed.
2121 - Queued remote jobs recreate remote printers as needed
2122 when the scheduler is started.
2123 - Deleting a printer also purges all jobs on that
2124 printer.
2125 - Old job and control files that don't belong to a
2126 printer are automatically deleted.
2127 - Wasn't updating time-at-processing and
2128 time-at-completed attributes in job.
2129 - Didn't send required multiple-operation-time-out
2130 attribute in response to a get-printer-attributes
2131 request.
2132 - cups-lpd now supports options set with lpoptions.
2133 - The job-hold-until attribute is now provided with all
2134 jobs. For jobs that are not currently held the value
2135 is "no-hold".
2136 - The scheduler was not sending "unknown" values in IPP
2137 responses.
2138 - The lpoptions command now accumulates options from
2139 previous runs rather than replacing all options for a
2140 printer.
2141 - The IPP backend now switches to IPP/1.0 if a 1.1
2142 request fails.
2143 - The lpadmin and admin.cgi programs now validate new
2144 printer and class names.

2146 received in a POST request.
2147
2148
2149CHANGES IN CUPS v1.1b5
2150

2164 from getting through.
2165 - Not all of the Ghostscript error output was being sent to
2166 stderr.
2167 - The PostScript filter now added PJL commands to set the
2168 job name and display string, if supported.
2169 - The scheduler would crash if the browse socket could not
2170 be bound. Now disables browsing if port 631 (reserved for
2171 IPP) is being used by a misbehaving daemon.
2172 - The USB backend now looks for the older Linux 2.2.x USB
2173 printer device filenames as well as the newer ones.
2174 - The IPP backend now uses the UTF-8 charset exclusively,
2175 since apparently only CUPS handles more than US-ASCII and
2176 UTF-8...
2177 - Wasn't quoting ( in PostScript banners...
2178 - Send-document requests with no document-format attribute
2179 could cause cupsd to crash.
2180 - Old jobs in the spool directory might cause cupsd to
2181 crash.
2182 - CUPS now supports all of the recommended job-hold-until
2183 keywords as well as name values of the form "HH:MM" and
2184 "HH:MM:SS".
2185 - Added placeholder pointer for TLS encryption to the HTTP
2186 connection structure.
2187 - Fixed the "fast poll" bug reported by DISA - the

2189 - Revamped put_params code in pstoraster to fix bitmap
2190 allocation bug with FrameMaker output.
2191 - Ripped out filename, etc. code from pstoraster as it
2192 is a potential security hole.
2193 - Added support for RIP_CACHE environment variable in the
2194 new pstoraster.

2204
2205 - Documentation updates.
2206 - Many makefile and configuration script fixes (should
2207 now compile better under *BSD.)
2208 - The MediaPosition attribute was being mishandled by
2209 GhostScript, causing the RIP to fail whenever a paper
2210 tray was selected.
2211 - The scheduler now logs the final line of log information
2212 from a filter, even if it doesn't end with a newline; this
2213 primarily affects GhostScript error output.
2214 - The scheduler was saving implicit classes, so after a few
2215 restarts you'll end up with AnyPrinter, AnyAnyPrinter, etc.
2216 - The JPEG autodetection didn't work with some JPEG files that
2217 came from digital cameras (JPEG but not JFIF); the new
2218 magic types should work with all images that the JPEG library
2219 can handle.
2220 - Fixed a bug in the new contains() MIME type rule that could
2221 cause cupsd to crash.
2222 - Switched to using strtol() in the MIME type code so that you
2223 can use hex, octal, or decimal constants as desired in the
2224 mime.types file.
2225 - Banner files are now treated as templates, allowing any type
2226 of file to be used as a banner.
2227 - Added a 30-second timeout to backend device reports so that a
2228 hung backend will not prevent the scheduler from starting.
2229 - Backends are once again terminated when jobs are stopped; the
2230 CUPS-supplied backends will stay alive until the downstream
2231 filters have had a chance to clear out old page data.
2232 - The charset lookup in the CUPS localization support was wrong
2233 (iso8859-x instead of iso-8859-x)

2253 was set to 0 (now uses 30 seconds if BrowseInterval is 0)
2254 - The DeskJet driver now supports 600 DPI color for printers
2255 that support it.
2256 - New lpinfo and lpmove commands.
2257 - The lpq command now supports the Digital UNIX output format.

2261 print multiple files using create-job and send-document
2262 requests (1 job ID for multiple files)
2263 - The lp command now sends multiple files as a single job,
2264 matching the behavior of the System V command.
2265 - The "cancel -a" command now purges job history files.
2266
2267
2268CHANGES IN CUPS v1.1b3
2269

2286 file is generated).
2287 - The scheduler did not start jobs destined for remote
2288 printers when they became available.
2289 - The scheduler now sends jobs to remote printers
2290 immediately. (when sending jobs to a class, the remote
2291 printer is only used when it becomes available)
2292 - The scheduler now supports printing of banner pages
2293 via the job-sheets attribute (banner files go in
2294 /usr/share/cups/banners)

2296 (override with -f)
2297 - Added several *BSD enhancements.
2298 - Added UNSUPPORTED libtool option to configuration
2299 script to allow the use of libtool. Note that this is
2300 UNSUPPORTED by us, but added by request of the *BSD
2301 folks.
2302 - The parallel, serial, and usb backends now retry the
2303 opening of their ports. This allows multiple print
2304 queues to be associated with a single physical port,
2305 and will allow CUPS to support several types of
2306 parallel port auto-switches in the near future.
2307 - Set-Job-Attributes now supports adding, changing, and
2308 deleting job template attributes, and no longer allows
2309 job-printer-uri to be set (see CUPS-Move-Job)

2328 authentication for the test page instead of admin
2329 authentication.
2330 - Updated the RPM spec file for the current release.
2331 - Updated language support for Windows code pages.
2332 - 8-bit character set files can now use multiple fonts
2333 (needed for Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, etc.)

2348
2349
2350CHANGES IN CUPS v1.1b2
2351

2354 destinations, preventing it from seeing the default
2355 printer.
2356 - Many configure script and makefile fixes.
2357 - The Microsoft code page files were missing from the
2358 distribution.
2359 - Added a workaround for the HP IPP client (which is sending
