3fe71c46 84A single parameter specifies the year to be displayed; note the
4b5a1ab8
SK
85year must be fully specified:
86.B "cal 89"
87will not display a calendar for 1989.
88.PP
6dbe3af9 89Two parameters denote the month (1 - 12) and year.
4b5a1ab8
SK
90.PP
91Three parameters denote the day (1-31), month and year, and the day will be
92highlighted if the calendar is displayed on a terminal. If no parameters are
93specified, the current month's calendar is displayed.
94.PP
95A year starts on Jan 1. The first day of the week is determined by the
96locale.
97.PP
2d4f3bfb
BS
98The week numbering depends on the choice of the first day of the week. If Sunday
99(the default) is used for the first day of the week, then the customary North
100American numbering will be used, i.e. the first Sunday of the year starts the
101first week. If Monday is selected, then the ISO-8601 standard week numbering
102is used, where the first Thursday of the year is in week number 1.

117The
118.B cal
cad44d02
BS
119program uses the 3rd of September 1752 as the date of the Gregorian calendar
120reformation -- that is when it happened in Great Britain and its colonies
121(including what is now the USA). Ten days following that date were eliminated
122by this reformation, so the calendar for that month is rather unusual.
123The actual historical dates at which the calendar reform happened in all the
124different countries (locales) are ignored.

126Alternative calendars, such as the Umm al-Qura, the Solar Hijri, the Ge'ez,
127or the lunisolar Hindu, are not supported.
